>>NARRATOR: As the Tommie Searches: Episode 6, The Interview.
>>NARRATOR: When we last left Tommie, he decided to make an appointment at the Career
Development Center to practice his interviewing skills with a
mock interview. The counselor he met with also gave him valuable
interviewing tips to practice before the real event.
Today, Tommie is in the lobby of his potential employer,
waiting to be called in for his interview.
>>TOMMIE: Any minute now. C'mon Tommie, snap out of it!
You can do this!
>>INTERVIEWER: Tommie? You can come in.
>>TOMMIE: It's nice to meet you, sir.
>>INTERVIEWER: It's nice to meet you as well.
Now, could you tell me your full name, please? And tell me a little about yourself.
>>TOMMIE: My name is T-Thomas- [Clears throat] Excuse me. My name is Thomas Aquin.
I am currently a student at the University of St. Thomas.
>>INTERVIEWER: St. Thomas, huh? The Tommie-Johnnie game must be coming up
soon.
>>TOMMIE: [Laughs] It is this weekend, we're all very excited about it.
>>INTERVIEWER: I'll bet. Well, Tommie,
as you probably know, this position is an internship.
While we want you to be able to bring some skills into the position
if you were to receive it, we also would like you to learn from it and
enjoy what you're doing. We noticed your resume because it was well-focused
on what you could offer this company, but also what you wanted
to receive. Does this sound like something you would be
interested in?
>>TOMMIE: Yes, it does.
>>INTERVIEWER: Good. I'm going to ask you a few questions now.
Tell me about a time you took a difficult situation and made it better.
>>TOMMIE: Well, in my first year at St. Thomas, I had a group project for one of my classes.
Everything was going well until the computer holding all of our presentation and work crashed,
just two days before it was due. Everybody in the group was really stressed
out and angry, but I helped reorganize the group, and we buckled down for the next
two days. We found everything we needed for the PowerPoint, practiced it, and did very well
during the presentation. We even got an "A" on the assignment!
>>INTERVIEWER: I see. And what do you hope to
get out of this internship?
>>TOMMIE: Well, I hope to further better myself and
gain skills that I can use for the rest of my life.
This internship would help enhance what I am learning
in my classes and be a practical way to gain skills for finding
the right job when I graduate.
>>INTERVIEWER: Good. Why should I hire you?
>>TOMMIE: Well, you mentioned earlier that you were looking for someone who wants to learn
as well as contribute. I am the perfect person for that;
I've had some work experience, but I also want to learn more.
In the past, I have gone above-and-beyond to do well in my work, and I would do
the same if accepted for this position.
>>INTERVIEWER: Alright. That's about all the time we have.
I still have a few more interviews to conduct, but I will call and let you know within a
week. Thanks for coming in, Tommie!
>>TOMMIE: That sounds great! I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for the opportunity.
>>NARRATOR: Tommie leaves the building, calm the entire way out.
Once he is outside, he seems a little more excited.
>>TOMMIE: Yeah! I did it! I totally nailed the interview!
>>NARRATOR: Will Tommie's strong interview get him the job?
Will he remember to write a thank-you note as a follow-up and impress the interviewer
further? Find out next time on "As the Tommie Searches"
brought to you by the University of St. Thomas Career Development Center.
