Chef Karen Krimmer: It’s been a crash course in cake construction.
Tommy Tucker : Julie Lonkey: So this is something new for
me and I kind of like it a lot. Chef Karen Krimmer: We were asked to make
the cake for the Columbus bicentennial celebration and the student were given an assignment – a
list of landmarks – and they were allowed to select which ones they wanted to do.
Lily Leung: I picked the Columbus airport because and I picked it because I love doing
all of the details. Lindsay Durflinger: I didn’t do a building.
I did a cake representation of the James Cancer Center. I was really interested in doing it
because my dad was a patient there and I wanted to represent what they’re all about.
Jim Curran: At a period in the 1990s I worked as a consultant at AEP for three or four years
and I used to walk to the building and I could see it in the distance. It’s just a memory
that stuck with me. Julie Lonkey: This represents the casino
and the casino is going to be the newest landmark in the city. I’ve been fascinated with it
ever since I found out it was coming to Columbus. The challenge was just the sheer size of the
whole thing. (break) In the beginning I was going to have the dice a foot square but had
to cut them down. They’re made out of rice krispe treats. I’ve probably got about five
family-sized bags of rice krispe treats right here.
Shawntay Moore: I built the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. I felt it was a big memory for Columbus
from Jesse and the track meets that he won. Allison Horsley: It’s Ohio Stadium. The
grass – I used a tip that piped it out and it would make grass. Layer by layer and I
lined out the lines perfectly. Then Script Ohio is made out of black licorice chunks.
Then for the band members I used icing. Then the fans are made out of little sprinkles.
Tommy Tucker: Santa Maria (beginning) To me, that’s just part of the allure of doing
this contest is to get a scholarship. But for me it’s just fun, you know.
( ch. 4) This bicentennial calls for more than just your grandmother’s double layer
chocolate So Columbus State students have created 31 landmarks for the celebration.
(ABC 6) But what we’re going to focus on this morning is chef Karen Krimmer has this
completion going on and all these cakes, they are amazing cakes. They’re from Columbus
State. Karen: This is the Columbus State Baking and
Pastry Arts program. We were asked to make the cakes. What’s different is that each
of these represent is that each one is a Columbus landmark.
Johnny: Right. ( WBNS) Part of the event includes cakes made
by culinary students at Columbus State. You can see LeVeque Tower, airport, Ohio Stadium.
Look at that, really cool. Late this afternoon judges picked the cake modeled after the Santa
Maria as the best in show. Tommy Tucker: You know it’s not really a
job. It’s fun for me. It’s kind of like when we were kids on the playground. We played
in the sand. It’s fun. And for me playing with fondant and icing it’s that same feeling
I get – that kid like feeling. Tracy: Congratulations to him. They will be
sliced and served to the guests at the bicentennial bash tonight.
Chef Karen Krimmer: It’s been fun. A few challenges here and there. But what it’s
been for me is a tremendous learning experience. Allison Horsley: OSU cake: It’s really
exciting. I’ve never had the chance to do something like this. I enjoy cake decorating
and I was really excited when I found out we could this.
