While you can record your voice-over live, I prefer to do in a separate session.
But no matter how you do it; make sure to get the right equipment!
You might think your headset will do the job. Trust me: it most likely won't.
Your breathing will be very noticeable for example.
And no one wants to sound like a panting dog that's trying to make a phone call, right?
Think your laptop's built-in microphone is good enough then? Think again.
Unless you're doing bathroom commercials, you really don't want to go this way.
It's actually the worst option of all. Just forget about it, okay?
Then, what DO we need?
You will want to buy yourself a good USB microphone first.
I got the Samson Meteor Mic, but there are of course lots of other options.
The Meteor Mic does the job very well so far though, and it is quite cheap.
It also has a headphone output and headphone volume control
which is really helpful when playing back your recording.
You will want to buy a microphone stand as well, preferably one that is fully adjustable.
I hacked one together using a desk lamp that I no longer used.
For the more serious people, or people without Ikea lamps
I recommend to just buy a desk stand of course.
That large black thing in front of the microphone is a pop filter, which you will want to buy as well.
Besides protecting your microphone it also prevents popping sounds,
which can be very annoying. So get one while you're at it.
So, before you do anything else, get these items:
a USB Microphone. A microphone stand, preferably a fully adjustable one
and finally a pop filter.
