Ten-Hut! Take Seats! Sgt. Snake here with more Marine Corps movie
reviews. Today's feature film is the Stanley Kubrik classic, Full Metal Jacket, a dark
and disturbing film about innocence being lost in times of war and harsh reality. Our
film spends equal time in both Boot Camp and in Vietnam.
Some highlights from boot camp include: -Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann and his colorful
uses of the English language, including one of my favorite words, "Grabasstic," which
always brings a smile to my face (smiles). -More highlights include Matthew Modine showing
us his war face, which resembles a hairy-nosed wombat (hisses laughter).
-Beyond that we have that lovable, sanguiverous Sloth Bear pvt. Gomer Pyle, who ssssucumbs
to the peer pressure violently, plunging our film forward into Vietnam.
Our time in Vietnam is spent with Joker, a war correspondent played by Matthew Modine.
That gives our film the perspective of viewing the war without being as involved with the
daily goings-on. Our Vietnam highlights include:
Joker being reprimanded for wearing a helmet with a peace symbol next to the words "Born
to Kill". (disapproving nod) Also we have the Tet Offensive of 1968, which
represented the largest series of organized assaults by the Viet Cong in that war. The
Tet Offensive caused many Americans to consider whether or not the Vietnam war was even winnable,
since it represented a stark contrast to the news reports here at home.
Overall, Full Metal Jacket is a great film. Not because it is a great war movie, but because
it is a Stanley Kubrik war movie. Kubrik was the master of eerienesssss, which fit perfectly
with a film about a surreal and eerie time in American hisssstory.
And now to a personal matter. Many or our heroes are returning wounded in body and mind.
I, Sgt. Snake, represent K-Pot Coffee. Named for the Kevlar helmet worn by our troops,
as well as yours truly (displays left and right), K-Pot Coffee is a veteran-owned business
that raises money for veterans' charities. It is the perfect novelty gift item for anyone
who supports our troops. Use the 'About' tab below to locate the link
to order K-Pot Coffee directly from Amazon. Otherwise, feel free to share this video using
