a bizarre our raid happening in New York City on the Upper West Side
almond here's the story so the
Axtell development company in the big developer
and they're building a building called forty Riverside Boulevard
on which features you know to which will feature two distinct entrances now
let's go down a bit so I can explain the story to you so
in the city of New York right in
if you provide low-income housing in the city gives you sort of %uh you know you
how a quid pro quo you give that you know you provide low-income housing for
the fact that have high
you know I hide your the low-income folks you get more square footage to
build
a higher building in right so what we've come when you finally do
whatever it is that they're great 55 portable housing units for low-income
families
inside their 274 luxury unit
tower on the Upper West Side what in order to get it done
they decided they didn't want those low-income families to mix with their
rich
%uh the the other rich residents though they put all the low-income families on
a certain section the floors from 4226
and they gave them their own interests which is a different entrance at all the
rich people
which basically says if you're rich you go through one door
or narrow is the gate for the rich and
why are narrow is the gate for the poor and wide is the gate for the rich
all some pretty much they're saying that
we're going to build this to help the city we're gonna make sure that these
rich people stay as far
away as possible from the city
from the thrum the from the building's poor low-income residents now
herein lies the problem this is like the separate but equal
plessy both plessy versus ferguson number and this will go to court
clearly and they're saying that both no bowl
individuals are separate they're both equal but they can't mix together
on their tail getting a lot about rage from folks in the community who are
saying that this is crazy and the city needs to stop this decision stop this
I would if you should say you know what we don't want you know we're I would
rather not have your low-income
your low-income units if you're going to get them separate entrance in
well
