200 Maori and Pacific students have taken part
in their trade training course' orientation today at Waiwhetu Marae.
It's a roll out of a project
that's been championed by the Maori Party,
in coalition with the Government,
to give youth a better chance at gaining skills and employment.
Irena Smith reports.
Goind down a new pathway to a better life.
These are trades training students
doing courses in carpentry, painting and automotive technology,
under WelTec and Whitireia Polytechnic.
It's an outcome of the coalition partnership
between the Maori Party and National.
Last year's budget announced $43 million,
over four years,
towards Maori and Pacific trades training.
And as male and female are equals,
Jamie Hill has already completed her carpentry qualification.
Now she's after a painting qualification.
The students know
that they are much closer to gaining employment.
And as an induction project for carpentry students,
the sod was turned on a new Whanau Ora building
based at Waiwhetu Marae -
a joining of two projects to make them reality.
