How to Knit a Strawberry Baby Hat Part 1
Hi, Guys, I’m Kristen and Welcome to Studio Knit!
It’s the first of five days of yummy Strawberry goodness, as I have been receiving lots of
requests from you on how to knit these really cute Strawberry Baby Hats that you’ve seen
on my channel!
In part one today, we are covering the necessary materials, sizing, how to knit the brim and
base of our hat. A link to the complete playlist for all five lessons, as well as a written
pattern and all the knitting techniques you need to know, are in the description below.
The Materials we will use are a size 8 US 16 inch circular knitting needle, 4 size 8
Double Pointed Knitting Needles, scissors, a tapestry needle, and your yarn in either
aran or worsted weight in any 3 colors of your choice. Today, I’m using the yarn from
MiraGoods that I recently reviewed. You can check out that video and also I have a link
on how to purchase this colorful yarn online in the description below.
For sizing, we will be knitting in multiples of 8. What I like to do is cast on 48 stitches
for babies age 0 to 3 months, so for multiples of 8, that's 6 times 8 is 48. So then if you'd
like to do ages 4 to 6 months, add 8 more stitches for 56 or even larger, cast on 64
stitches for ages 7 to 12 months.
To begin, we will use our circular needles and begin casting on our stitches in our main
color, so mine is this bright hot pink and these hats look super cute in all colors of
the rainbow, so get creative with it, your color choice is TOTALLY OPTIONAL! I am going
to knit up a small 0 to 6 month old hat, so I’m casting on 48 stitches, and these are
going to stretch a bit on my circular needle. If you would like to know more about knitting
in the round, check out my recent video it goes a way more in depth on how to knit with
circular needles.
As always, we make sure not to twist our stitches once we're done casting on getting ready to
do our first knit row. I like to add a little yarn scrap stitch marker right here, it marks
off the beginning of each row as we knit in the round.
So, we just knit in the round with our main color. After the first row, one little trick
I love is to automatically weave in our yarn tail on row two. So, after row one, we're
going to pick up the yarn tail along with our yarn and we're going to knit three stitches
with those together. Once you knit all the way around the row, here on your third row,
simply knit those together, and then at any point you can go ahead and cut off that yarn
tail at any time and it will be woven in tightly automatically.
So now for sizing of the brim and base of our hat, I knit 12 rows around for ages 0-3
months which is what I'm doing here, go ahead knit a couple more rows, 14 rows for ages
4-6 months or 16 rows for ages 7-12 months.
Once you have completed knitting in the round for your desired number of rows, we are ready
to begin adding the cute little Seeds, which you can learn how to do in Part 2 of my series.
I hope you are inspired to knit up these adorable Strawberry Baby Hats. To learn how to knit
these up from start to finish, including a written pattern and tutorials on all the knitting
techniques we use, please go check out the links and my complete Playlist in the description
