My name is Christine Marquette, and I'm a registered dietitian with the Austin Regional
Clinic, and I'm going to talk to you about how to eat healthy at Cheddar's. Cheddar's
menu actually has several different healthy options to choose from. They offer a lot of
different grilled options; for example, grilled chicken, grilled seafood. All of those things
are going to be a lot lower in fat than their fried counterparts. So, if you want a meat
or seafood based entree, really angle for those grilled or char-broiled options. As
far as sides, try to get things like salads, steamed vegetables. As much as you can you
want to avoid things like mashed potatoes, or things that may have a lot of extra cheese
on them. Appetizers; generally it's a good idea to avoid appetizers before your meal.
A lot of times, you'll get a lot of extra calories from that appetizer. You may actually
start to get full, and when your entree comes out you may not be that hungry. But a lot
of times people will want to go ahead and eat their entire entree, so best to avoid
the appetizer. Stick with the, a pre-meal salad if you can. Enjoy your entree. Have
some side steamed vegetables. If you really want dessert make sure, again, that you're
splitting dessert with a group of people. Try to avoid having just one single dessert
on your own, cause' that will add a lot of extra fat, a lot of extra calories to your
dinner meal. And then as far as drinks are concerned, the low sugar varieties are the
best, so that would be something like an unsweetened tea or a tea sweetened maybe with a sugar
substitute, like a Splenda or an Equal. If it's a soft drink you want a diet version.
Coffee, again unsweetened or sweetened with a sugar substitute would be the best options.
And then of course, lots of water. You definitely want to make sure that you're including a
lot of water just on a daily basis, and it's a good way to remember to do that when you
go out to eat is to get water, as well as your other beverages. As far as alcoholic
drinks, you do want to avoid those if you can, or if you have one, just limit it to
one drink with your meal, cause' that does add a lot of extra calories to your meal.
So, these are just a few basic tips for how to make healthy choices at Cheddar's.
