%uh see for yourself the hippocratic oath and all the other oaths that %uh the oath of
miamonides and other oaths that graduating medical school classes take
solemnly before they graduate
%uh to the effect that they will put the patient's interests ahead of any other concern and certainly
ahead of their self-interest their economic self-interest
that statement
is belied by the realities of this %uh new medical marketplace
that has come into being in the united states
and young doctors now
take this oath in good faith
but then they get out in practice and they confront the system in which everybody's
making a lot of money
by being entrepreneurial
and they say if they do it why shouldn't we now there are some laws so-called stark
laws
%uh
limit
the extent to which doctors can be in direct conflict of interest by
%uh for example by %uh owning a facility a diagnostic facility to which they send their
patients
but there are loopholes and there are exceptions
and %uh the net result is
that a lot of this continues to go on
