I'm here on the streets of Toronto trying to find savvy diners.
Do you know how much salt is in your food?
Two different salads...
two lots of ingredients. Which one's mine, which one's yours?
Remember, I was going to have the low-fat,
low-calorie, low-sodium one...
and you were going to have the really fatty one with lots of salt in it.
But which one is which? -I'm not sure. Ah, right!
We'll have to find some people to find out.
Just by looking, how would we know how much salt is in there. - See how much like...
creamy stuff is on it. - That one has more bacon bits.
The brighter lettuce would have more salt.
The salt would make it brighter. How could I find out how much salt is in this salad? - You gotta taste it for sure.
You gotta taste it for sure...We gotta fork? I kindly need you to use this divining rod
to find out what's in here.
I'm going to say that one right there. - And your reasoning for that?
uh... it just looks like it has more sauce on it, I don't know.
If one of them had half your daily amount...
and the other had twice the amount how would you tell? - Ummm
Yeah no there's no real way...
of finding out. - I've got these two spaghetti dishes here
they're both from the same restaurant. I have no idea how much sodium
or calories they have in them.
Which one of these would you say from sight alone, has higher calories?
Those meatballs are massive! - This has been said before.
Let's have a look and see how much salt is in there, go on and have a look. Can you see any salt grains? - Definitely some salt crystals...
on the outside of this meatball. - How about calories, can we see any calories? - Nope.
We can't see any calories.
Who defines this? This is useless! You're daily intake of sodium is 2,300 mg.
2,300 mg, okay. - Would you know what that looked like?
No idea.
So that is your daily allowance of salt. You could eat that now...
and you wouldn't eat any salt for the rest of the day.
I wouldn't do that. - Do you want that now?
No. - Come on we can get it out of the way, eat it now. - Oh no that's so gross! - Actually you'd probably break the...
World Record for projectile vomiting. 2,300 mg okay.
Is in that? - Is in that. - Oh, that's too high. - Anyone like any daily limit of salt?
Salt madam, your daily limit of salt, would you like it?
Have it all now, don't have any later.
Not even trained professionals, not even dietitians, can really tell just by looking
at a restaurant menu item whether or not it's got the kind of sodium levels that
they want, the kind of calories that they want. - But David if that's the case i will never eat
lunch again. What are we going to do? - The sodium and calories are right on the menu. So that
when you're making your choice between those two salads you have the
information at your fingertips. - David you're a genius!
You're a genius!
Let me take you to lunch. - Absolutely!
