You are hoping pretty fast, you got sweaty palms, your mind is racing. All of these are
symptoms associated with public speaking. Hi, I am Ryan McLean from publicspeakingpower.com
Today, I want to talk about six problems associated with public speaking: These are serious mental
problems; these are serious issues and should be taken seriously, if you do have them. So,
let’s talk about them, let’s talk about these symptoms and you can see if you have
any of these problems yourself and you can seek out how to fix your specific problem
because one problem is not the same as the other and the method of improving your confidence
getting better at public speaking, overcoming your fears going to be different for every
single person. So, problem number one is Fear, stress and
Nervousness. And this is the thing the most of us have, this is not severe anxiety, this
is not severe stress, this is just a natural nervousness that we get, natural fear that
we have, when we are going to speak in public. Things like sweaty palms, things like racing
mind, your heart beating little bit faster or what else sometimes your legs get a little
bit shaky, these are natural signs of you being nervous in the eye of presentation.
Look it is not bad to be nervous to give a presentation, especially if it is going to
be an important one. When I knew when I was a rep for a pharmaceutical company and I knew
I had to role play with the CEO of a company, get a sales call what I would say to one of
my customers, I was naturally very nervous, who wouldn’t be as a young sales rep or
playing with the CEO of a massive corporation. So, I had that I had sweaty palms, I had a
racing mind, kept thinking about it, I was very stressed leading up it but when it happened,
I’d flew into it and it went fine. The stress went away so it was done obviously and things
were fine. It was not stress or nervousness that I could not deal with. It was just uncomfortable
so that is number one. Number two is anxiety and this is more severe
than that natural stress and nervousness and you know it is anxiety when you got some symptoms
like hot and cold flashes, you got tightening of the chest or sometimes even you feel like
tightening around the throat area or your mind does not just race, it snowballs the
wires, things get worse and worse in your mind and you got some obsessive thinking that
this is going on. That is a sign of anxiety about public speaking. That is very common,
a lot of people are getting anxiety about public speaking but anxiety is very different
to that natural nervousness and stress, with nervousness and stress sometimes, we can just
do some breathing techniques or some relaxation techniques, anxiety is more serious so we
need to treat it differently that is for another video another podcast and so I can’t go.
I am not going to go into detail of that today. Number three is panic attacks. So this I believe
is more worse that anxiety, I haven’t had an attack before, they say that anywhere from
15 to 35 percent of people will experience a panic attack sometime in a lot so panic
attack is like V anxiety, shortness of breath, you had nausea as well, you have heard about
people vomiting before I need to give a speech, that can be from a panic attack and that’s
immense fear so it’s like anxiety with immense fear and what happens sometimes with panic
attacks is that people become afraid up their anxiety and so they had these panic attacks
about the anxiety that they are going to be having in the future, or the anxiety that
they are having in the moment and can be very debilitating and so the people will avoid
situations where they are afraid they are going to have a panic attack or afraid they
are going to have anxiety and this is why some people have panic attacks and not leaving
the house this did to leave the house because they are scared to be put in a situation where
they are going to have at attack so this is something that’s very serious. Again, it
is very common when it comes to public speaking but we are obviously in a look at this very
differently that we would look at the natural stress or just the fluttering.
Number four is insomnia so this is something that happens. Generally, it’s the night
before you need to give a presentation and what happens is your mind is racing thinking
about you switch thinking about what might happen what might go wrong in trying to remember
this page and because your mind is going 1,000,000 miles an hour, you can’t get a sleep. This
is very common problem associated with public speaking there are some techniques that we
can do for that and I create another podcast about that.
Number five is post-traumatic stress disorder so this happens when you have has a past experience
probably related around public speaking where it went terrible and for some reason you just
had this horrible situation, this horrible feelings associated with public speaking and
so whenever you think a public speaking maybe can be doing it, or just thinking about it
in the future, are you trying to become better at it you keep going back to this moment in
time where it was traumatic for you and so you need to do with that differently to anxiety
that happens in the moment because we need to look at that post-traumatic stress and
again that is beyond the means of this exact post to discuss that and so discuss that in
more details as time goes on. Numbers six is depression so this is not as
common but still does happen with public speaking is that you get so why did you get so stressed
that actually leads to depression and you start feeling very down and you don’t want
to get out the bed, you don’t want to talk to anyone you obviously don’t give your
presentation but it’s just this feeling of white is feeling a depression and I’ve
had depression before in my life so I know exactly what it feels like. I haven’t had
depression around public speaking specifically but I know what depression is, I know what
it feels like very hot to get out of that mental mind to downward spiral and so they
have six problems associated with public speaking did any of those reasons with you do you have
any of those problems that are associated with public speaking? I believe that it’s
very important to put a name to your problem and to be able to understand your problem
better because I mean understand the issues we have then we can look at solutions but
if you are having anxiety and you are treating it like small nervousness or you having panic
attacks and you are just reading it like you are a little bit stressed and probably going
to overcome that situation and overcome those feelings because a panic attack is so intense
if you are just dealing with it the way that I deal with a little bit nervousness when
I get up to speak then it’s probably not going to work with you so it is very important
to understand your problem, what’s going on with you so that you can then begin to
learn more about those and become to overcome them if you want more videos, audios and articles
just like this one, you can get them all here available at publicspeakingpower.com, I am
