Eisenhower State Park, about 40 miles south of Topeka and easily accessible to Kansas’
urban areas, is a great place for a fall getaway. Located on the north side of Melvern Reservoir,
this park is known for its beautiful prairie setting, good fishing, and recreational boating,
camping, horsetrails, and Frisbee golf. Now, a unique trail for kids helps set it apart
from other state parks in the Kansas system – a safe and fun scooter trail restricted
to small motorbikes less than 50cc in size. The 1.5 mile trail starts and ends at Westpoint
Campground with an additional trail exit on the loop’s backside. It winds through a
hillside forest, offering shady bicycling and hiking as well. Horses are not allowed
on this trail. Traffic is one-way and all motorbikers must
wear a helmet while on the trail. All motorized bikes must be under maximum engine size requirements
and equipped with factory-stocked mufflers only to keep noise down. Motorbiking is limited
to the hours of 10:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. daily. However, the trail remains open all hours
to foot traffic and bicycling. Here’s a high-speed tour of the trail, which
is now usable and in the final stages of completion. It will provide a unique and popular addition
to the Kansas State Park System, and is another way that KDWPT helps connect you with the
outdoors. Try it out this fall.
