Fridays will be Current Events day in history class. You will be responsible for
a Current Events assignment once every trimester.
A sign up list will be passed around class. After signing up for your be sure to
record the day in your planner so you don't forget to do your Current Event.
You'll also be told whether you need
to pick a local, national, or international news event.
There's two parts to this assignment.
For the written portion, after selecting your article from a reliable source - a
newspaper or news magazine - online is okay,
cut or print it out and read for understanding.
Don't forget to ask clarifying questions if needed. See me if you need help
understanding your article. Use the current event right up handout to do the
following:
list event and day of the event,
works cited information for the article,
a short summary of the event so that
I have a basic understanding of the event without having to read your whole
article,
a paragraph stating your opinion of the event - say more than "this event makes me
sad." If the news and that makes you sad, explain why. Make connections to other
news events in your life in this paragraph.
Also staple the article to your write-up.
Feel free to type your write-up, just make sure to include all of the needed
information. The written portion is worth twenty points.
You will also be asked to present your article to the class. While you can use
your write-up for support, you should know the article well enough that you're
able to talk to the class instead of reading to the class. It is okay to prepare
notecards to help you with your presentation.
Your speech should also include some kind of visual show us on a map where
the event occurred make an illustration to share. Do something to help the class
better understand the event.
Don't forget that you will have the document camera and projector to use in
your presentation. You will be given the speech rubric to help you prepare for
your presentation. The same rubric will be used to grade your presentation.
The presentation is worth twenty points.
Your last part is your Current Event self-reflection.
You're going to complete the self reflection after your Current Events speech has been presented.
They should be typed in organized
bullet format.
It is due one week after your speech, you may turn in early.
Watch the video of the speech that has been emailed home to you,
you may need to watch it more than once.
In bullet format cover the following points: what did you do well in his
speech?
what do you think you need to improve on your speech? And how will making this
improvement help your speech overall?
Outline how you will improve your next formal speech. Please don't just say, "I
need to practice more."
Be as specific as possible. What will you change about the way you practice? Be
descriptive and make a concrete plan.
