Today we are demonstrating the MiniGuide US remote unit distributed by the American Printing House for the Blind.
The MiniGuide US is a handheld electronic travel device that is intended to be used with a blind person's
primary travel method such as a human guide, cane, or dog guide.
The MiniGuide uses ultrasound to detect objects and gives you physical or auditory feedback by vibrating or chirping more rapidly
as you approach an object. The MiniGuide has five ranges it can be set to depending on personal preference or
situation. The MiniGuide US also has a separate remote unit to be used in instructural settings.
Potential clients will have to go through a training session in order to learn how to use the MiniGuide.
Today Justin will show Laine how the MiniGuide US chirps to notify her of the close proximity of objects.
After the auditory demonstration, Justin will instruct Laine on the different tactile settings the MiniGuide can be set to.
Here's an example of the MiniGuide US in action.
When Laine enters a room, she will use the MiniGuide US to scan the area. The closer she gets to an object, the more the MiniGuide
will vibrate. As she crosses the room, the remove vibrates as she gets closer to the seating area. With the help of the MiniGuide
she is able to safely find her way and be seated.
