The National Forest Scenic Byways Program recognizes highways that are outstanding examples
of our nation’s beauty, history, culture, and recreational experience. There are over
nine thousand miles of these byways designated by the Chief of the Forest Service. They link
gateway communities to the natural attractions of the national forests and grasslands. These
byways help to promote rural economic development. Many of these byways have also become recognized
by the Secretary of Transportation as National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads. Some
early byway efforts on national forests have also help lead to National Scenic Area designations.
