I remember when I was applying to CCA. I went to a friend's house and I just got in, and
the first thing he said was, "How are you going to afford it?" And it kinda hit me,
and then I got an email and I saw my scholarship and there was just this look on my face --
my mom tells me there's this really big look on your face of relief.
All I really know is art. That's what I've been doing for my whole life. I wouldn't have
been able to come here if I hadn't had scholarships.
Arts education is important to me because I've never wanted to do anything so badly
than to go to art school in my life.
I think education can transform students into makers and thoughtful makers and they in turn
can transform culture.
You're starting to see a need for better solutions, and I think designers have a lot of the tools
and capabilities to solve a lot of the problems we're having today.
Creativity is what makes technology work. If you have technology without creativity,
you don't have a whole lot to gain, and I think that's what the future is all about.
We need more creative people out in the workforce helping us meet the challenges that are facing
us everyday. Investing in education, I think, is one of the most profound ways that any
individual can help have an impact on the future of our country and of the globe.
Oh, I believe everybody has a right to an education. It was much, much easier when I
went to school than it is now. For that reason alone, I think people should help students.
Whether the diversity is in the student body; whether it's the faculty; whether it's in
the approach, the teaching approach, I think diversity should be celebrated at CCA and
I think it should be encouraged. And if we can use scholarships to do that -- I think
we should -- all the better.
Two out of three of our undergraduate students at CCA receive CCA scholarships. Without that
very important support, those students would be unable to attend CCA. With a continued
slow economy, low-income students struggle to enroll at CCA. From 2008 to 2012, the amount
of aid needed by CCA scholarship students increased by 22 percent. CCA devotes 27 percent
of its annual budget to student scholarships. Nearly 22 million dollars annually!
We view education as a transformative experience. Giving money to scholarships merely facilitates
those students being able to access that experience.
I've been so blessed to have so many amazing working artists who are instructors here and
that's been pivotal in me honing skills and also learning how to talk about the art that
I make and why I make it.
I would say thank you so much, because of you I get to do what I love and just explore
every aspect of design that I can. Just know that it's changing people's lives; it's giving
people a chance; it's giving people perspective. You're creating tangible solutions by a college
that really cares about its students.
I'd like to say to my scholarship students to know what it is that they want and then
go out and get it, and don't let anyone stand in your way.
Create. Spark. Inspire.
Give to CCA scholarships.
