Journalism, right now, is in the midst of a tremendous flux. But while many people are
pessimistic about the future of newspapers or about the future of broadcast, journalism
plays such an important role in our society, because an informed society is integral to
the success of a democracy. And I think that as we're seeing a big shift, if we take a
longer view of these trends, the changes that we're seeing right now - the closings of newspapers
or the decline in readership of newspapers - there will be the upside to that, that will
come, that will lead us out of that. Maybe a couple of years from now, maybe five or
ten years, we'll have to wait and see. But I think using these new tools - from smart
phones to tablets to the Web - and really learning how to tell stories and to take advantage
of those mediums...I think that's a way that journalists can tell deeper stories, they
can tell very rich and engaging stories, even stories that entertain, so it doesn't feel
so much like "eating your vegetables" to have to read the newspaper.
