God! You might have thrown upon me all the evils
of misery, of shame,
made a ruin,a lie
of my bold triumphal trophies...
And I would have borne the cruel cross
of anguishes and shames
with a quiet mind
and have been resigned to the will of heaven.
But,o grief, o sorrow! They have robbed me of the
mirage
in which I joyfully appease my soul.
Dimmed is that sun, that smile, that beam
which keeps me alive, which makes me happy!
Clemency, immortal and merciful
rosy-smiling genius,
at last you must cover your holy
face with the horrible mask of hell!
Ah! Damnation!
She must confess her crime first, and then she shall die!
Confession! Confession!
The proof! Over there? Heaven! O joy!
