Hi guys
I'm going to be showing you how to make one of these
thick mesh stitch
pot holders
and they are really
easy to make and
and they work up really quick. And with this stitch you have two
different options. you have this look
or you can turn it inside out
like that
and the look of the stitch changes
so it's up to you what look you want to go for
so i'm goling to show you how to make one of these and how to sew it up
all you need for this project
is some
worsted weight yarn
this stitch looks great with solid or variegated colors
What you need to get is 4 ply US or 10 ply AU size yarn
and also uh... huh
five-millimeter hook
or a size H hook
you need a tapestry needle to
to sew your potholder closed
or you could use
your crochet hook
I like to flatter look the tapestry sewing leaves
So that's what your going to nee, when you have that, then lets get started
make your slipknot
to begin
you want to chain thirty-one
three
four five six
seven eight
counting....
counting....
twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen
counting....
counting.... thirty one
so once you have the thirty one made
start by going in through the second
chain from the hook
you have 31 stitches now, but you are losing one now
so you'll have a total of thirty stitches
now work
one single crochet in all the stitches
all the way down
count to make sure you have all thirty stitches at the end
counting....
counting....
counting....thirty
what you want to do now is
single crochet into the same stitch as our last single crochet
so you should have two in this same last stitch
then pivot your work
now you're going to be working in the bottom stitches here
so now
work one single crochet
in the next stitch
and down along your chain
going this way
as well, go underneath noth
the stitches here
the other way I only worked under one loop
this way i'm using the other two
loops of the chain
anyway make your way down here and
count your stitches, you should have thirty going this way as well
for a total of sixty stitches all the way around
okay I'm done and I counted
my stitches and I have sixty
to start round two
this is then beginning stitch
slip stitch into your beginning stitch
chain one
and in the same stitch that you just slip stitched into
go back into that stitch
and do a double crochet
and chain one
then skip one stitch
and go into the next one
and do another double crochet
and chain one
skip one stitch
and double crochet
and chain one
continue to do
skip a stitch then doing one double crochet and chain one
all the way around
you want to do down this direction
then you will turn and pivot your work and keep working around
and then when you get to here
I will show you how to end the round
just make sure
that your skipping only one stitch and that you're going into the next
okay, i'm at the end of my round
this is where
we began
and I know it looks like there's two stitches here
but there really is only one stitch
the other one is where we slip stitched
so this was our last stitch, of last round, then we slip sticthed into this one and it created
what looks like another stitch
but it's not, don't count it, it's just the skip stitch, the first double crochet is our acual first stitch of the round
so count your stitches
make sure you have sixty
and this top of the double crochet is the stitch that
we will slip stitch into
and then chain one
I know it's difficult, but if you can see
just right below it to the left (right if your left handed)
in this skipped stitch that we have
I want you to put a double crochet in there
so for the first stitch only we will be working backward to put a double crochet in that skipped stitch
then chain one and now we're
going to be working
are regular away
this is the next skipped stitch here
so we're going to be putting a double crochet in that skipped stitch as well
we're going to be working in the same round
Round two
and putting a double crochet there
and chain one
then you go into the next skipped stitch from round two
and put a double crochet and chain one
and continue to do this
all the way round
we're doing the
thick crochet mesh stitch
if you've never done this stitch before
I do have a beginner tutorial if you need it
so just continue
working
a double crochet in the skipped stitches and chain one
all the way around
until you get back to the beginning
and
this is round three
when you get up here to the end i'll show you how to end round three
okay
i'm at the end of my round
and from now on
the very last double crochet of the round
you don't chain one
from here on, Just the last double crochet of the round
reason why is when we slip stitch to end the round
the slip stitch will count as our chain one
for that space
now to begin round four
chain one and this will be how you
continued to do this beginning stitch
until you have
a total of nineteen rounds completed
chain one
and working two rows down as before
the double crochets that you usually would be working to the right of
you will be working to the left of this first double crochet
and it will be like that at the beginning of each round
the next round when you start it, you will be working to the left of this double crochet your about to make now
So keep in mind we will always be working in the stitches of the round two rows down
you can find the stitches by using your
finger if you need
again for the first
stitch of the round you're going to be working too right
so you want to go down
into that skipped stitch next to your double crochet
to the right there and chain one
now we're going to start working as normal, to the left
now for the regular stitches, you always want ot put it
two rows down to the left
and double crochet
and i know it may seem difficult but once you get it down, the stitch is very easy to do
so keep going down two rows
into the skipped stitch
and do a double crochet and chain one
you need to do this for a total of nineteen rounds
and you can count your rounds
by counting your double crochets
diagonally
easier for me to show you on the other one
that I already started
start counting from the first double crochet round that you did
and count up diagonally
counting....
until you have nineteen rows total
the once you have nineteen
decide which side of the potholder you like the best
the outside look
or the inside look
so what i'm gonna do
what wht you do for round twenty
we're going to do exactly what we were doing this whole time
except for instead of doing double crochets
we're going to do a single crochets
so i'm going to start my round again
and chained one
so now i want to go into that same space I would normally go into
to the right of my starting point
except this time i'm only going to do
a single crochet
and chain one
i'm going to be
closing these gaps
left by the double crochets
so go into your next space
do single crochet
and chain one
just continued that around
for round twenty
and i'll show you how to close this up
oh and on this last stitch
when you're ready at the end
chain one
after the last single crochet
as usual
then slip stitch
into that beginning
double crochet and that's where it ends
and then
you take your pot holder and fold it
it folds naturally
and then this is where you can start
your slip stitches if you want to use the hook method
you need to slip stitch all the way it to here in the corner
and then just slip stitch back and fourth
OR you can use a tapestry needle, which is what i'm going to do
okay once your down with your single crochet round
now you have an option
to either
go in
through the opposite side
and do a slip stitch
and continue
going through the first stitch on this side
the into the stitch on the opposite side
and do a slip stitch
or single if you prefer, if you use slip stitch it may lay flatter
so you can connect it this way or you
can use the
tapestry needle
which is fine
and if your doing the
and single crochet method
when you get to the very end here
if you want a loop for hanging, chain seven or eight at the corner
and then slip stitch
to connect on this side
then you can chain one and cut your yarn, leaving yourself enough of a tail to be worked into the potholder
of your going the tapestry needle way
then when you finish your single crochets
chain one and cut your yarn, leaving yourself quite a bit of tail for sewing
and to make a loop on the end for hanging
once you thread your needle, work your tail to the nearest corner
now again this is the time to decide which side you want to be showing
I am going to keep this
side facing
and like with the single crochet method, you will be working
by going in through one stitch one this side
then going into the equal stitch on the other side
try to make sure you keep it
as straight as you can
making the hanging loop,
you can use your fingers like this
using your fingers to decide how big of a loop you want
insert your needle again into your project from the same side
to the other side
and pull your yarn
then I like to tie some knots
to make sure that your loops don't come loose
like that
now you have a couple of loops
you can use to hanging it on something
so once your done making your loop
you just keep continuing down
back and forth until you reach the end here
okay just finishing my last stitch
leave yourself a loop to feed your needle through
do this at least three times
then you can hide your tail
through your stitches
cut your yarn
and there you go
that's how you make a thick
crochet mesh pot holder
I made one of these for my mother-in-law
and she thought that was a bit too thick
so what she did was she used it as a hotpad for a little while
and it flatten it and thinned it out for her smaller hands
now she uses it as a pot holder too
so if you think it's to thick you can do the same
but I don't have a problem with it because I have big hands and long fingers
so i'll be using this as a potholder
