This stupid comic painter! Just why is he so successful?
I need to do something.
Why can't I think of anything?!
Abracadabra!
Everything that is painted with this brush will come to life.
The first evil guy the painter paints will steal the color palette for me!
Comics, I love Comics!
Now what could I paint today?
I know - I'm going to paint the evil guy for my new comic.
But... where is my brush by the way?
Hi there, it's the postman!
Ah, cool. That must be my new brush.
Right, here is a brush for you.
Thank you. Well, let's go. What does an awesome evil guy look like?
Maybe... a gleeful smile...
...then messy hair, of course...
...and most important: warts all over the face.
You know, it's always so exhausting to be creative...
I think I'm going to take a nap.
Good night!
Now that was a short nap... well, let's just go on.
There's some work to be d-
Where is my color palette?
Did you see anything?
Oh, I get it. The evil guy I painted must have come to life and stolen my color palette.
I must follow him!
Okay. Let me and the whole Cologne Domino Team welcome you here at CDT 2011!
As you just saw, there's still a problem... we already wanted to topple the first domino,
...but now the color palette is gone, and without it we can't start.
So we somehow need to entertain you until we have the palette back.
I think we have a video available that shows what happened in the last years.
So we'll show you that. Here we go.
So there we saw what happened here last year and in the years before.
So you already have an impression of what you are going to see here in this domino show.
But we didn't even show you yet what will happen today.
We're going to present the course we prepared now so that you're not lost during the falldown.
The whole thing will start over there with the painter's palette.
Then the title fields will fall and start a line that goes over here into the first project.
That first project is Asterix - a French comic, very popular among both young and old people.
Our project includes this big Asterix field, of course, and as well a small field of Idefix...
...and a recreation of the village. It isn't really 100% accurate, but we did our best.
We go on with The Simpsons - the theme being Comic & Cartoons, this is the first cartoon.
It isn't hard to see what will happen there: The members of the Simpsons family will topple,
each one with a special trick, and in the end this wall will vanish with a beautiful effect.
Afterwards the project goes on in the back section. We have the Lucky Luke project there,
a great Wild West comic. Our project there shows the showdown at sunset,
Lucky Luke and Joe Dalton dueling. Maybe you can't see that very well yet from your place,
but we will broadcast a camera angle to the screen later during the falldown.
The next project is Disney - popular both as a comic and as a cartoon.
We have a Mickey Mouse field there...
one of the Beagle Boys with the characteristic safe he wants to steal money from...
and the Disney wall that shows the creator's signature.
Then in the end we have the Spiderman project.
You can't see it well yet because of the screen our painter has placed there,
but we will remove that later. Now in the project we have a Spiderman field,
a spider's web that will break to pieces, and a city that Spiderman swings through...
and that will crash because evil forces that dislike Spiderman destroy it.
And then the final. We will have a special task there, the Builder's Challenge.
You could already see in the video what that means:
When the dominoes are already falling, somebody - two builders this time -
have to fill in a gap, here on this staircase. The tricky part about that is:
The builders are tied together at the hands and are not allowed to talk while building.
That will be a very tense point, because if they can't manage to fill in the gap,
this gate won't open and the whole field that you see here, displaying Snoopy and teamwork,
cannot fall. Those are about 17,000 dominoes standing there, including the lines.
And if that doesn't fall, it could be a close call if we have a new record or not.
So it's very important that it works.
Okay, now you know what will happen later with these 155,555 dominoes,
but in order to have an impression of what a big amount 155,555 dominoes actually are,
we prepared another small video that we want to present to you.
Today is the big day.
In a huge spectacle, 155,555 dominoes will be toppled in the Liebfrauenschule.
In order to give you an impression of the dimensions, we present some facts to you.
If you stacked all of these dominoes on each other, the tower would reach a height of 7500 m.
That is 2700 m higher than the Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in Europe.
Even laid flat, the dominoes would still reach 1166 m.
That is about 7.5 times the height of the Cologne Cathedral.
Laid next to each other, the dominoes could cover about 68% of a tennis court.
If you lined up all the dominoes, it would take them 40 minutes to topple.
And last but not least: The total weight of the dominoes is 1.5 tons.
That is almost as heavy as an Audi A4.
Now we would like to start of course, but... yeah. The palette is still missing.
But wait a minute, I'm just being told that our camera team is capturing...
...the painter chasing the thief. I think we can show you some live footage from outside...
Is it me or did they just come in here?
Well. Let's just hope the painter will eventually catch the thief.
Because otherwise we can't start. But I have a feeling that he will get him somehow.
A few minutes ago, I explained the project to you,
and now I want to say a few words about how much work it was to do this.
Our team consists of 21 builders, and we started building nine days ago.
I think that shows how laborous this is. For example, that Disney wall crashed six times.
So it can be quite frustrating as well,
but luckily, there's always someone in our team to cheer you up and motivate you.
Okay. And now I think we'll have a video that we actually planned to leave out,
but since the painter still hasn't caught the thief, we'll just show it now.
It shows the huge effort behind this event.
The palette isn't here yet, but we still have something to do.
We have to announce who will do the Builder's Challenge.
Simon and I just took our final decision about that:
Davy and Tim are this year's challenge builders.
The other thing left to do are the safety gaps. Eleven of them are still in the project,
and now Davy and Marcel are going to fill those gaps.
Please be quiet while they do that, it takes a lot of concentration.
And if we somehow get hold of the palette, we can finally start then.
Okay, thank you very much to the two.
It's a really difficult task and they did that very well. Oh, wait...
Our camera team has been able to track the painter and the thief again.
We switch to their live broadcast again and then we can hopefully start soon.
The color palette!
I'd say we can finally start now!
Yes, we are almost ready to start. We just have something left to announce:
It isn't allowed to take photos or videos, expect for the press of course.
We will put the falldown video on YouTube so you can watch it there.
Now we just have to switch on the cameras...
and then our vice-headteacher, Mr Bräunl, can start the falldown.
Well. We have a few dominoes left standing.
Which was a really gentle way to put it.
Now we will of course have to count the dominoes that didn't topple.
Sadly the Builder's Challenge didn't work. I'm really sorry, we're all really sorry.
They did their best and it was just slightly not enough.
We'll now find out if we have a new record or if the old one remains valid.
There's going to be some live music in the meantime. Feel free to stay for the result.
We have the official result now. If the team could just come over here...
We have toppled...
125,104 dominoes.
A new record!
So, thank you very much for coming here. We have a new record.
It would be nice if you didn't still go through the field
because the dominoes are easier to clean up if they haven't been stepped on.
But feel free to take a closer look at the projects now.
We would be happy to welcome you here again next year. Thank you very much.
Wait, we still need to say thank you to some people.
I almost forgot that now although it's actually the most important thing to say.
Thank you to our janitor, Mr Ulli Frey.
He always supported us as much as possible.
Thanks as well to the vice headteacher of our school, Mr Bräunl...
...for coming here and starting the chain reaction.
And we are also thankful to the school governance in general,
we appreciate it very much to have the possibility to host this event here.
Thanks of course to the media for featuring us and visiting us here.
We thank our parents for the support throughout the whole year. Many thanks.
And thank you to our technicians - Thomas...
Sebastian...
Tobi...
...and Alex.
Of course we also had to eat something during the building week.
These two guys, Thomas and Timo, have cooked us some awesome meals, thank you.
Okay. Thank you very much and goodbye.
- Niclas... - What is it? - Would you come over here please.
You made the masterplan, you have organised everything to make this possible...
...so Niclas actually deserves the biggest applause.
- and Simon!
Simon spent the last year abroad, and still he designed all the domino fields...
...and worked a lot for this, so thank you very much.
Could I just answer my question, guys?
SILENCE!
