In this chapter, we're going to look at metadata. So let's first talk about what Metadata is.
Metadata, essentially, is additional information about a file and it's simply stored in that
file. This information may be stuff like the scene,
the shot, the take, who the director is, the DP actors, even your e-mail
address, pretty much anything you can think of, and it's stored in that
file and can be browsed by most Adobe video apps.
So the next question that you'll probably want answered is why is
Metadata important? What good does it do you in your video workflow?
Well, there's a few reasons for this. One of them is that once you get past the
art of editing, learning how to edit video, the challenge of the video editor really is
media management. You might have dozens or hundreds or even
thousands of video clips that you need to organize and be able to access at a moments
notice. And really, Metadata is the ultimate management
tool for media, being able to access, locate files of a particular line
of dialogue or whatever, Metadata is the key. Another aspect of this is that it is the future
of the Adobe workflow. Adobe is putting a lot of emphasis and effort
into developing Metadata and using Metadata in the postproduction workflow especially,
with on location, which we'll look at later in his training series.
So now that we know what Metadata is, and why it's important,
let's move on into this chapter, and look at working more with Metadata inside
of Premiere Pro.
