Hello, I'm Sabrina Karges and I've owned and operated TKO, Teleprompter Computer Operators,
for over twenty years. And I'm here to talk to you about how to be a teleprompter operator
and business owner. What is a teleprompter? It's a display device that prompts the person
speaking with an electronic visual text of a speech or a script. Using a teleprompter
is similar to using cue cards. The reflective glass is script or speech for the talent and
that would be me. The glass is reflecting from the monitor. The monitor is being fed
the script electronically from a computer where the operator is controlling the speed
and feed of the script and speech. This application frees the speaker from having to look down
at notes so they can look directly into the camera lens. Cue cards would be placed away
from the camera. The first teleprompter was created in the 1950's and was a simple mechanical
device that was paper fed. Jess Oppenheimer, producer of I Love Lucy, claims credit for
the original concept of the teleprompter and was awarded the patent. Lucille Ball used
the teleprompter to read the commercials on her show. The word teleprompter was derived
in the United States, which is also known as prompter. Another term used primarily in
the UK is auto cue. And I might add, I'm using a teleprompter monitor, but it's off camera.
Can you tell? Off camera, on camera. Off camera, on camera. I think I need to get another system.
