Floods displace Philippine residents. On Friday, June 3, the National Disaster Risk Reduction
and Management Council reported that overflowing rivers following Typhoon Songda rains have
forced 13,000 families from their homes in 21 villages of the Maguindanao province towns
of Pagalungan and Datu Montawal. Schools have also been closed, and farmers are concerned
that their corn and rice fields may be ruined by the water and thick mud. A state of calamity
has been declared in Pagalungan, with government agencies and the military acting quickly to
provide food aid to those evacuated. This recent flooding follows that of nearly 60
other villages in Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur provinces, where more than 20,000 families
were affected earlier by floods due to the typhoon.
Conveying her heartfelt sympathies and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai requested our nearby
Association members to please check with regional officials to see if any assistance is required,
asking that they also go if possible to offer comfort to those most in need as she said
that funds for urgent necessities would be available.
We thank all agencies and personnel for your swift assistance as well as Supreme Master
Ching Hai for her kindhearted concern. Wishing the affected Philippine people a soon recovery
of their regular daily lives and that our planet may once again regain her harmonious
state as we strive for more sustainable, benevolent ways
