Hello and welcome to this online tutorial on ‘Accessing The Buffalo News’, via the
Buffalo and Erie County Public Library databases. In this lesson you’ll learn how to access
The Buffalo News via the library’s databases, how to browse daily issues, and how to conduct
a simple article search.
So here’s something you might not know. As a Buffalo and Erie County Public Library
cardholder, you have electronic access from any computer to full-text articles published
by The Buffalo News since 1989. That’s over two decades of articles right at your fingertips.
How can you do this? First you start from the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library
homepage located at buffalolib.org. You need to click on the ‘Research’ link. On the
next screen, click on ‘Research Databases’. If you're not in a library, you'll have to
enter in you library card number to get to this screen. At this point you can scroll
through an alphabetical list of the databases the library subscribes to. Look for ‘Buffalo
News’ and click on it.
A screen will pop-up and take you to the Buffalo News page contained in a database called NEWSbank.
There are two ways you can access articles from this screen.
You can browse any day’s newspaper articles by date. You can do this by entering in a
date, picking a recent issue, or using the dropdown menu to pick a date. Once you’ve
selected a date, you can browse that date’s article by section. If you see an article
headline you are interested in, click on it and the full-text of the article will appear.
As you can see just the text of the article is available. There are no photos.
You can also do a search for articles in The Buffalo News that you are interested in. To
conduct a search, there are a few different steps to take. You would want to start at
the Buffalo News page again. From an article page you can click on the ‘New Search’
button. However, this time you’ll enter search terms in the boxes and pick where in
the paper you want to search. You can add rows if you have multiple search terms.
For example, you can search for the word ‘Sabres’ in the Headline and ‘bankruptcy’ in the
Lead/First Paragraph. You can also search by date. Just click in the box and pick the
time period you want to search in. In this case we’ll do the past five years. Then
click search.
You’ll see the total number of results and also the number of results broken down by
year. At this point you can click on any headline to read the article. At any time you can edit your search or start
a new one.
The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library thanks you for watching this online tutorial
