Hey everybody this is Pastor Katina Davenport. I want to talk to you today about a question
that i was asked a couple of days ago. This young lady wanted to know how to have a dance
conference for her dance group. Her particular dance group happens to be between the ages
of 6 and 11 and so she was like wow what do I do? Where do I start? Can you help me? And
so the first thing that popped into my mind was to make things fun and exciting for her
children since they are the ages between 6 and 11; and you want to have games and exercises
for team building. One of the things that I love to do with my smaller students when
I was teaching dance that was to have freeze dance. She can incorporate that into her dance
conference just to make things fun, get everybody loosened up, and get everybody ready to participate
with the rest of the conference. That could be the opening thing, that could be the last
thing however she may want to do it; or however anybody wants to do that make sure you have
something fun and exciting for the children to do. Now you also want to give them the
Word. Make sure you give them the Word, it's like first and foremost, that's the premier
thing that you want to do and have set in place. I gave this young lady an example a
little sermon that she can do for the children and she can do it on fear because from experience
I know that my daughter has little bit of a fear problem of getting in front of people
in expressing herself sometimes and so she may need a little encouragement from me to
get her going. And so there's scriptures and prayers that I do with her. And now this dance
teacher could go and create a sermon about fear, give scriptures about fear; and how
not fear and how to rely on God, how to come out of their shyness and to rely on their
Helper to get them through their dance. Also one of the things that i like to do with both
adults and children is to have something sweet and that way they can associate the Word with
sweetness. This a Jewish practice that they do on one of their festivals where they have
apples and honey for the children because that is like their candy and when they sit
down to hear the word of God they will associate the sweetness of the candy with the word and
they will sit down and listen and they will always have that with them down through the
years. I have done that I have given out treats, I have given out donuts I have had healthy
things, and I would do that while l was teaching the Word of God so you they can be first of
all replenished before they begin the dance workshop and also so they can have that association.
The next thing you want to do is work on creativity because children are very creative. They want
to be able to express their creativity. Some times they don't know how to express their
creativity and the activity to do is to do is improvisation and interpretations of songs.
You give them a line of a song to a popular song that is playing on the radio currently
and that way they will be able to familiarize themselves with that particular song and be
able to come up with dance moves that way and be creative with the interpretation of
what they, have i just my little notes, here also you want to do dance techniques make
sure you keep it simple so that you will show your group your children how to position themselves
position their bodies correctly prevent injuries and give them new combinations steps to do
do work across the floor so they can be familiarized with going from backwards and forwards starting
from the right foot and starting from the left foot and you know it uses their minds
and it is not just mindless dancing but they have to think and be smart about their dance
moves so these are the things that i would do if i were giving a conference for dancers
that were between the ages 6 and 11 keeping it exciting be creative giving them the Word
of God showing them dance techniques and you will see them flourish when you spend some
time in doing that so this Pastor Katina Davenport with Dancing in the Spirit Foundation of Liturgical
