Hi, my name's JK Dooley and I'm a professional artist and a question I get asked a lot is,
'what's the difference between an open edition and a limited edition fine art reproduction,
or in this case a giclee?' An open edition is typically printed on a lighter weight stock.
You'll see it's available for purchase. Typically it will not have the signature of the artist.
It will not have been inspected by the artist and it's going to be less expensive. So that's
the basic difference between the two historically, an open edition, when prints would be pulled
from a plate, if you know anything about print making, an open edition would allow you as
many prints from that plate that you could get before the plate wore out. So that's where
that term came from in the historical idea of printing. But with a giclee it's typically
the same type of deal and you'll see a lot of these around where people have purchased
them and it's not an original piece of art but it's definitely a high quality piece if
it's done correctly and it's certainly a great piece of art to have in your home. And that's
a brief explanation of what an open edition giclee would be.
