hello and welcome to World Canvass from international programs at the University
of Iowa
I'm Joan Kjaer at the Senate chamber of Old capitol Museum on the
campus of University of Iowa
could have you with us, this is the final program in our four-part series on
teaching innovation and tonight we're talking about teaching with technology
technology is nothing new of course and the existence of 21st century
technologically doesn't automatically make
teaching or learning any better you have to know how to employ relevant and
constructive ways
well we have two UI faculty members here in our final segment in the series to
tell us how they're using new technologies
in their teaching David McGraw is just my left,he is a lecture in the
division of performing arts nice to see you David okay
thank you &next to him is George de la Pena, associate professor and chair of the
department of dance here at the university.
hi george, thanks for coming ,so the first question to you david
I know that you teach many topics but among them
directing and you have some tools to develop to help students understand some
of the complexities in
stage management ,direction.. yes so
I'm the head of the stage management program ,the graduate program
and one part what a stage manager does is essentially
working as air traffic controller for everything that happens in a live
performance
so whether in theater, opera or in dance
or the Super Bowl halftime show there's a stage manager who's coordinating with
ten twenty different technicians other ways you might see it as a conductor
with all the technical elements, but this can be very hard to train students
the high-stress of putting them in front of twelve different people who are
waiting for their next order
and we tried a different ways to try to simply modeling best behavior in the
classroom
I would call it a sequence and it has some value and we've tried using video
where they'd watch a show
and they would practice calling all the cues and using different communication
systems
and there's some value in that but oftentimes the soon to learn the wrong
way or going to develop a bad habit
because they don't receive any feedback and so what we developed is a simulator
the simulator we were inspired by Guitar Hero or rock band or
video games but you gonna sing along that area style
and we were inspired by air traffic control simulators
which of the two ideas we come together so that now our students
on their own laptop at home in their dorm room at the library
can watch videos taken from the vantage point to the stage manager
which might be multiple video streams and then we use voice recognition
software
that allows call accuse and within a quarter second accuracy
we can say whether that he was early or late it was garbled in the
communication but they don't know when they start out is that we also have
included
errors so that is a a performer misses an entrance
if white something goes down and then they have troubles
shoot on-the-spot and that way they get their instantaneous feedback
the screen actually kinda changes color almost like a scoring system
and they get to have their immediate assessment of their work
and then they become much more confident so that mean they are in the right
situation
they know that they can do the job and they can react more to the environment
at the time
Wow so that and why did you set this all up how long you've been working on
this
has been in progress almost five years
I'm very grateful we received innovations in teaching with technology
award from the University
I was also very fortunate and that some other programmers for Guitar Hero
who are based in Iowa and also that we were able
team up with an engineering class they really studied how the user interface
would work
so the sooner margins the program and it's a replica of
the booth that a stage manager would occupy and that all the programming
controls in the booth recognition we've been able to test to see
the most useful and in some ways we're learning how better to setup
actual real-life booths based on what we've been able to gain from student input.
so there may be ways that you you can just create a better working environment
based on something we are you
be do in our field the lab billed up

well that's great and he mention a couple other things the to you several
technological
a DSi one is there helpful one is this my pants might
spend yeah I was taking process which i think is really cool right and I would
recommend this
everyone and whether or not your student %uh there are a number of these new
smart pants Livescribe is one of the brands that produces them
and the concept behind is pretty simple that there is a regular can but the
camera
is next to the tip and there's a microphone at the top
and so that while you're taking notes you're also getting the audio
reported and it stretches along a time line so that
as you write a word you to be able to see here
what's being said at that time I and a lot of people use it for regular
production meetings racer staff meetings when I do my class is that for
wanna make advanced courses no one's prohibited from taking notes
some people really that's the best way to process information for what I found
is that for a lot of people
they think that is the first step where that's all they should be doing
and so I have my sons were writing out notes and cell processing information
or engaging in the discussion I am so
we rotate one student per class is taking the nose for the entire group
then we simply load onto the internet any student can get the nose for that
day can hear all the audio that happened in the room
Soriano's look more like outlines new and the students can drill down
find information when they want to review it but it lets them to step away
and and the more active and we can go in greater depth because no one else has to
write out the dates
know we're currently discussing were the formula questioning had class
well said George tell me what might you use the way in new technologies to help
your
dancers your choreographers do what they need to do well i i
weather has been a problem that we've been trying to solve is the difference
between
feeling what you're doing and what it actually looks like
and so on from my experience in film and television
I whenever I would see some love the takes their word and I would go all
goodness gracious session do that again and I began to refine
many many techniques I as a consequence
in cell were seem that would be a good idea and
which we were given a grant for from a tack to
are explore was too have
and device woods which was very portable like this tablet here
and iPad and I'll be able to you
film the student in the moment and should be able to
show them what they were doing so seeing is believing kind of a situation
so and first
we would get permission from student may i film you
second it would and are we would
do it without any instruction and and
third the student would look at it and so the student would give their feedback
on what they thought they were seeing
and up try to solve the problem themselves
and then the additional interaction with the
teacher to go one step further and hear the reasons why
then we also got a wonderful ap from
Apple that was up your anatomy that you can very quickly
access on the iPad and you can actually show them the bar on the skeletal system
and the bones in the the skinny the muscles
mom I add that are actually operating at that time
and a.m. to the extraordinary to seeing what that visual
did forward their thinking mmm the intricacy above the musculature
was on I helping to them and
so Maywood engage those areas
%uh musculature in a very different way so
this its we've just begun it
and edits getting some very good results and
we hope to you also on work with sports medicine
to you be able to deal with repeated
stress injury I and also
any typeof up gait analysis that would help students
reduce the be a injury right
yeah for us how I'll and how have questions taken to it today is a7 aha
moment when they see their heroes and another grade teacher with this is the
fact that after you found them you can actually send it to them
and they can observe that several times so it's a it's a document to them that
they can refer to you
and slowly worked at embodying
that correction and training the muscles in such a way that they are
tracking and proper manner yeah attacks
that's just a very basic teaching tool that what we can do with this in terms
of our research program at the research in our performance research
up is is extraordinary in addition to you
all the gaming technology that is occurring so
this makes up creating a Sat that's fantastic all
so much more affordable and for dance because we to require didn't concert
dance
yeah it's a extraordinary job for us in what we can
the environment that we can create this virtual
environment to human rights has several explain a little more so you may not be
building sets & dragon in with you in a semi to some old
in fact this yeah INF so many people are doing this
I already so we are also teaching the students to be able to
think in that manner and the imaginative things they come up with and turns out
the
set places photographs how they manipulate the
photographs is extraordinarily artistic
I in fact I was just a I notice that David Hockney has a
big exhibit over in San Francisco right now and he does a lot have his new
painting
I had yeah so it said muah
and we are she are sticking our toes in it now I'm
very excited what what will happen now

well and I know I am here to a girl
we did a project with it´s here on campus where
there was joint choreography a joint project being done with dancers in South
America
I had to recall athey the project which I thought was very cool because you're
doing live real-time
rehearsals through crack I said if you had with it´s
and yet you're not only not in the same space you are on another continent but
interacting with other choreographers and other dancers and
them coming together at some point all welcome that streaming capabilities
is has been extraordinary because we've we had a crack for recently who is and
Germany and we didn't work working on one of her pieces and she was able to
login and observer purcell give notes
it's been quite extreme and then that's just a small part yes
what's being discovered that can be done home well tell me about a new idea
Osher sOooo are wanna my courses we cover event management so if you're
going to do a concert
or a gallery opening or when they civic events
I am so again in the traditional setting I would go through the logistics the
budgeting the scheduling
insurance policies everything else are
and then what we decided to do was go again we teamed up %uh this time with
Sita
which is a student a group that you can bring them into your class and
the assist faculty in developing new innovative ways
teaching I and a new idea isn't online competition
so I have my class about out in two teams
with the goal of creating a one day event that would appeal to university I
was students
they work logistics and planning then we move into marketing the Devo
print advertising online advertising press releases
they devote their own commercial for their fictitious event
and then we move into social media usage and we
have this competition runs for two weeks each year in which
each team is trying to gain enough votes from the general public
are so again and a borrowing sayings from some on the
television reality TV competition shows
us a call and vote for your favorite where they're gonna visit our website
I am so everyone thinks that their facebook connection should be enough to
win it
on knowing you may get a few friends but can you get hundreds or thousands of
votes of best
I and so they find better ways of connecting with your audience
are there to provide any audience with what the audience wants and are they
making that strong connection
I and so really lets them experiment do more experiments in the field
adjuster tactics as they go are better understand what they think an audience
might one person's what the audience truly
is proceeding from whether being given I and it's a a fun kind of competitive
element to it
and it's worked very well we run it now for three different years when you're
even went up against a another class
are teamed up with a sports management instructor
and so again we were all limited to one day but who can get the most votes for
that
Mar and then we can look at this or the back end of it and will analyze
how where the different those were coming from that will retracting
how much in Iowa City nationally internationally last year we got on Sat
three different continents
know to get votes into this competition I and II think it'd
allows students to feel much more invested much more engaged but also for
them to be able to start listening
that not just what their perceptions and you know
was somewhat George discussing that trying to move them from
being a student to being a learner or researcher on their own
that they should just rely on migrate to say that this was a good project
but were they able to get a large enough audience an audience and staying gauge
my and kinda moving onto can they make adjustments on the own
once a look at the research wanted watch the video of themselves
what is their sasser can we train them to be better sasser's
so the not relying on a single authority figure who won't be there once they
graduate from school from
and how they can handle criticism yeah this this is also
certain and women the amazing things that I noted about
anytime somebody point the camera at you your energy changes immediately
and what does that mean exactly on
in in the studio class technique class
at the minute I left this and ask permission suddenly
at their energy rate jumps to eighty-five percent
or 90 you know and then the it's just such an improved
a demonstration after which
and that always shocks me and I sent you
he's not home do you feel how much more you just did
happy with how much more focus you gave them much how
mindful you were about what you were doing and
I and it's this little recording device
handset that really transforms them
and and for me to ask them invite them
to remember that on a regular braces and make it there
physical practice at all times just makes the improvement happened so much
more
thoroughly home do you I
in a tacit I'm into you I have
deal with your with questions from the students about
I've popularity of a certain kind of dance will I be able to get a crowd
disco dance other courses within the dance department where you're looking at
I his reaction I'm you're trying to
and bring an audience in a way that david has just mentioned is there have
that within the dance department
many margins go to Davids classes I G
their certificate to have this kind of expanded sense
about also that is not necessarily our primary concern and permanent dance
there's a lot of exploration %uh gender
and perception I love up who you
are as a performer if you will versus just someone
and what his performance so many things are being explored
I in addition to you what is the audience feeling
and actually heard ty of that that I'll
sometimes it seems come in and as your question was you know what will be
popular what will
the audience while but for us as our news
how we can better inform our audiences culture those audiences
and so actual value i do. one team but they have a winning idea
they're gonna get a very popular band they're gonna spend all their budget
I'll just bring the band and
and surely that's what people want and actually the team that won a year
they decided they were going to do photography exhibit that the students
would be the photographers
the Uni posting on this case on Facebook images that meant
whether university by women to you and what would be the most creative ways
it's
re seeing the community up what angle would really have that
and because the students who were voting really had the idea how they would be
participating
that it was theirs as well then it is game that popular it wasn't something
that was
what's the best have mmm lowest-common-denominator entertainment
format
but what was something that was going to matter in my life and that's how they
engage with the art
mmm home and also with an intriguing perspective on it
so as you as you are taking the shot you are inviting them to cede something in a
new way
he threw your eyes and that is that creativity is extremely important and
the arts is
especially here at the University violates a great value bars
mmm

this
mmm what does seem to me that I'm you know
world the world seems to work these days is through some
so it has media you know I'm whether it's cason I and II
you know viral video or I'm a beautiful dance segment from dance gala
you know these things are shared widely and I'm
I'm sure that all the students feel that we all wanna look our best ally do our
best male R&B Kat at our best and
I suspect a reason I'm it distance feel
empowered to say to you for example if you shot them I
at a moment where there are rain the Virtual Set you're going to be using its
as close to the real deal as it can be if a student thanks
home could we do this are teachers open to that area SharePoint it went
yeah very much so collaboration is one of the key things that we invite
I is it we find
as as so many of us a
in the arts that the young people have such great ideas
but truly excellent ideas and to invite them to really share that
is fantastic an intern riches the teachers and every month so there's your
flipped classroom
digital learning yeah and we're using this technology to have more time for
the humanity
I we're using it to maximize the time that we can interact with the students
when are moving on all or bring them closer and yeah I am and there's much
better at this than I
hacer I can imagine I can imagine special raises their arm
its anything new on the horizon and she can share at this point is fair
anything at the gym working on that I'm gonna try and one up the style
classrooms the character
officers have addressed something tried in spring I'll and a also use it for the
assessment
I love what if we treated are does as a lab course
and so how can we experiment with then I am using some the
quick response systems are go clickers around campus %uh
so that as we're watching for pieces of art we can see how
as students how they're engaging with it a different points in the process
I am just gonna breaking it down that way I've no idea will be successful but
I think it'll be a great experiment at Houston to hopefully buy into that
I am up we r
exploring I motion capture me are exploring working with robots
am wearing green wrapping for realizing we have a very exciting class with
computer science
I we receive also grant for that and I'm purchased
for mazing robots and
the movements that they can do our extraordinary but we see
very fun potential artistic
on things that we can do ship that
new entry into our world there you're just a miserable day I'm sure
with these robots look like all their there about this tall
and a are on this now like there are two dy to know the israelis magistead then
yeah
that like a little person looks like a little prince
an extraordinary they're really extreme are very excited to be
I am introducing this as to
in our concerts had sooo fun so and so in the end you would have your live
dancers
interact absolutely quiet that I will not have the
yes the human and the from has in addition to that we also are
you know that the whole virtual environment thing is and we're just
starting on that
and we they're great great possibilities with that there are a lot of the fact
that we can produce for the
a technology called isadora I and
its transforming how we are able to you
on invite the audience to a new world
how fun this is Craig really good to talk to both you guys turn ship any ups
and downs and David McCraw from
he writes and so nice to have you here really appreciate it so much and
this has been a fourth part of a four-part series on teaching innovation
at am so grateful to all of our guests who are with us for these
