>> Rebecca: Hello, my name's Rebecca Knox, and I'm Chairman of The Dorset Fire Authority.
I would just like to take a minute of your time to introduce some services which Dorset
Fire and Rescue Service deliver throughout the county, Bournemouth and Poole, which will
be new to you, but not new to us. And not to many of the people who we have helped within
the community over the past many years, that our firefighters have been reaching out and
helping - particularly young people and those who are vulnerable. Whether you are working
in children's services, adult services, the voluntary sector or schools, wherever you
might be, I think you will find a service that is explained to you in the next short
film, which will help all of us in partnership, work for the best of Dorset. I'd now like
to introduce you to Darran Gunter, the Chief Fire Officer of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service.
>> Darran: Hello everyone, my name's Darran Gunter and it's my privilege to be the Chief
Fire Officer of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service. A Service of course that you will all be familiar
with and a Service that traditionally many of us know that has primarily dealt with incidents
like you see behind me. This is the devastation that we face on a daily basis. And we are
very equipped, very experienced in dealing with tragedies and the aftermath of tragedies.
But of course (like many public services) we now believe that prevention is better than
cure. And over the last 10 years you will have seen and experienced the services we
would of provided to our communities. To the young, to the old, to the vulnerable and to
perhaps those not at risk, to make sure that they are less likely to suffer the dramatic
affects of fire. But our intervention, our prevention goes much further than fire. Because
what you will find is that fire is a common symptom of perhaps troubled or a chronic lifestyle.
We therefore work with other agencies, with other partners, to intervene to provide professional
and also personalised services. To ensure that through the vast experience that Dorset
Fire and Rescue Service has, its' standing in the community, its' reputation and its'
trust with individuals, we can reach those hard to reach groups. And make sure that everybody's
got both a safer and a stronger lifestyle and life chances. We offer you here the kind
of opportunities that we can give to our communities, that we can give to your organisation, that
together we work in partnership to make Dorset safer and stronger. Together we provide the
right professional and personalised services to those most at need in our communities.
One of the reasons for providing this information is that when myself, my staff, my elected
Members, my Chairman go out and talk to Services, very often they say "We didn't know you did
that", or "We didn't know you could do that for us in a personal and professional way."
So what we've done is provide some information in a booklet. But also put together some case
studies of the kind of interventions, the kind of prevention, the changes the new direction
that we can give to young people. I hope you enjoy the information and the short film that
follows. And I very much look forward to my Service working with yours, together in
the future. Thank you.
