Hi, I am Charles Macfarlane. I am the Chief Executive Officer
of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
United States diabetes education is a multi-professional endeavour.
We have 50% of our members are nurses, then dietitians, some pharmacists
and other professions that practice in diabetes education.
We deliver in a variety of settings, in patients, out patients, primary care settings
And basically we cover all 7 care behaviours from health eating, exercises,
medication management, healthy coping, motivation, a variety of different components
of our curriculum.
I think our greatest challenges right now are dealing with an ever increasing population
of individuals that have diabetes
and also gaining access from primary care providers
to prescribe diabetes education Only small or a relatively small component
of our patients with diabetes have access to diabetes education so we think there is
a real opportunity there. As well as there are growing role of relatives
to the area of prevention.
So I think there are a lot of work and knowledge that can be shared across countries
relative to how we can work together and try to solve this problem which is universal.
