Hi, I'm Nathan Cortez, from Kofa HIgh School. I'm Jonathan Gil from Kofa High School.
Mr. Gil....We have a question for you... What...is wrong with education, in your opinion?
In my opinion, what's wrong with education is just that students' mentalities have become
more unappreciative of education rather than caring for it and actually wanting to learn....
They just don't care and they slack off...you know? They've just lost that appreciation for knowledge
that there used to be before in older generations that they were less privileged that us, you know?
I feel like we've become more of a materialistic society you know...we have all this technology:
iphones, cars, and stuff students just have everything they want
So like...What's the point of learning if you have everything you want and need?
The problems with education.... We could say that the problem is with education itself
while in reality the problem could very well be the manner in which we apply said education
Perhaps we are not following the proper instructions on how it should be applied
In itself, the educational model could be flawless, but there is a chance that the teachers are
not properly prepared to educate with that model. Or it would be more plausible that us parents
are the ones that aren't prepared for education. We leave everything for the
teachers to take care of, when in reality education begins at home. It could be that
we are not prioritizing our job as parents, and saying, "Let the school educate them for us."
But in reality we have to start here. The students are ours, and the problem is ours as well.
Are you saying that if parents were to be more involved, education would improve?
Exactly.
I think we need to get involved. For example, when a kid turns 15, we say
"He's grown up, he can fare perfectly fine on his own."
In truth, that's not how it is.
It is at that time that us as parents must tend the most to their necessities
and provide a support system at home,
We must try our best to tend to their problem areas and strive for improvement
then try and teach them at home before they go off and learn out in the streets.
Thank you for your time.
Thank you guys.
We couldn't get an administrator face to face, but we managed to get an administrator via Facetime.
Her name is Brenda Quevedo
And she is an administrator from Harvest.
Now, Ms.Quevedo...
What's wrong with education?

Ummm,.. I think excellent teachers are making the same money as
horrible teachers which, some teachers just don't care. Some teachers can't even speak
good English and I think that that's what's wrong with, you know... education, is that
we're not paying our good highly qualified teachers enough, umm... and we're not able
to get... our classes are a lot small- our, uhhh....our classes are- have a lot of students,
instead of being able to pay our highly qualified teachers so that we can get more smaller classes.
Umm...I think there's a lot of other things, you know, you see sports players and musicians
get millions of money but you don't see that, uhhh... being invested in this teacher education
which I think is more important at this point, so basically, lack of funding, and lack of parent involvement.
Thank you for your time.
Thank you.
In my opinion, the single thing that's wrong
with education today is that the administration, and the school district, and the school board
keep trying new programs and they won't keep the same thing 'till they've figured out
how to make it work. So, there's nothing wrong with having standards, there's nothing wrong
with common core standards, there's nothing wrong with testing students to make sure that
they've mastered the material, but.. If you try the 8 Step Process... If you go through
the AVID Program... If you have tried, uhhh... you know, whatever other programs that you're
gonna work with, and you keep changing it, then there's nothing that
will ever succeed in getting the students the education that they need.
That's what's wrong with education.
Ok, thank you for your time.
