>>Ms. Devin Hamberger: American journalist, novelist and
poet, Christopher Morely, once said, read every day
something no one else is reading.
Think every day something no one else is thinking.
Do every day something no one else would be silly
enough to do.
It is bad for the mind to always be part of unanimity.
Good afternoon everyone.
My name is Devin Hamberger and I'm honored to be here
at this luncheon today with so many other
deserving Foundation Scholarship recipients.
I'm equally as honored to be selected as the student
speaker from the mass communication department
to share my story with you all today.
I was the recipient of two scholarships for my final
year at Towson.
I was awarded the Chrystal Marie Clifford Scholarship
Endowment last spring.
Thank you to Lorraine (ph), Charles and Joann
Thomas (ph), who I have had the pleasure of
meeting today, for supporting this
scholarship.
I was also awarded the Eddie Ballard Award for
Journalism in the fall.
Thank you to Mrs. Barbara Lipson and Ms. Edna
Ballard (ph).
I was selected to receive this award after being
nominated for it by various faculty members in
my major.
These scholarship opportunities would not be
possible if it were not for the generous donors.
So thank you so much for being willing to support
students just like me in reaching our goals.
Throughout my time at Towson, I have been
involved in various student organizations.
I was the president of the Society of Professional
Journalists, an academic organization for
journalism students.
While this group was very small when I first joined
as a freshman, I got the opportunity to watch it
grow - both my volume and through gaining support
from students and faculty alike.
As a senior, I am proud of what my group has
accomplished and I am even more proud to be leaving
it stronger and better than it was when I first joined.
While involvement in student organization
definitely enhances the person's college
experience, there is something that made a much
more important impact on my life.
After my first communications class as a
freshman, I knew that this was the major that I
belonged in.
I left campus that day, feeling both overwhelmed
and inspired by the enthusiasm and passion
that my professor exemplified that day.
Throughout the next four years, the passion and the
genuine love for journalism that my
professors shared ignited me.
The stories and experience that they shared with me
reinforced my knowledge that this is what I was
meant to do.
I learned before my sophomore year that I
wanted to do something that would make a
difference in the world and my professors assured
me that I could do that and this is how.
They told me to read and to read things that others
were not reading.
They told me to think, and to think creatively and in
ways that others were not thinking.
They told me to do things, and especially to do the
things that others were not silly enough to do.
After graduation, I hope to start a career in which
I can use my writing to inspire others.
While I do not yet know what the future holds in
store for me, I know that my passion for journalism
and for inspiring others will make a difference one day.
Being selected for these scholarships means so much
to me because it reminds me that my professors and
the donors believe in me.
They have given me the confidence in my ability
to achieve my goals and I want to express my thanks
to them for the support that they have given me
throughout my time at Towson.
Thank you.
