What is Sickness Allowance, and who can get it?
OK Sickness Allowance is for a person with a temporary disability or illness, and temporary
means likely to last for less than two years. And Sickness Allowance is only, these days,
restricted to people that have a job to go back to. So that is, people who are unemployed
or are full-time students and become sick, they don't get Sickness Allowance anymore,
That get Newstart or Youth Allowance under different conditions. But if you've got a
job to go back to and you can't do your usual work, then you may qualify for sickness allowance.
You'll need a medical certificate every three months. And Sickness Allowance is reviewed
from time to time. And at some point, if your disability is persisting, then Centrelink
may decide that your disability is no longer temporary and you may need to apply for something
else.
