Today i
am taking a look at the Remastered hd version of the chronicles of riddick escape from butcher
bay. This full game is on the same disc as assault on athena. Escape from butcher bay
is the prequel to the entire Riddick saga.
The story is very well made the writing is solid and the voice acting is superb. Vin
Diesel does a great job as Riddick. Which is a good thing since Vin has as much range
as throwing an elephant.
The games overall graphics are quite good seeing as this is an updated xbox 1 game.
The textures are smooth and the level design is very good with plenty of variety. If you’ve
never played the 2004 xbox 1 game. You will never have guessed that this is a remastered
port.
Gameplay is very brutal and satisfying in butcher bay, the game relies on stealth and
at times some great gun play for the games long 8 hour campaign. The game also has a
robust and visceral melee system. You get prison shanks clubs and your fists to pound
your enemies or shank them or bash their brains in, or whatever floats your boat.
There are plenty of combos to learn and the close quarters fights are bloody good fun.
They just work so well blocking and attacking just has a great flow of movement.
However the game gives no hints on how to perform the combos leaving you mashing buttons
till you figure it out. In fact the entire game sort of just plops you in with little
direction. I don't want my hand held but a clue here and there would help like knowing
you can climb certain objects.
I had moments 3 hours in going what i can do that? Why was i not told?
On top of the great melee system you have some really exciting gunplay now considering
the game was originally made in 2004 the gunplay is slightly different from your call of duty
style shooter. Its fast and furious get it? any way gunplay is stylish and designed well
the guns have a nice feel and it leads to some intense firefights. One slight complaint
is that the guns sound a bit weak.
However the game can be brutally tough in sections the game is very satisfying to play
but it will make you cry.
Because stealth is thrown into the mix along with gunplay and melee combat the game just
has tons of variety keeping it fresh for the duration of the game. The story is solid even
if a bit cliched and the game looks pretty good for a remastered port. Overall, this
is an exciting and overlooked game you should check out.
