Hi, everybody!
Today's video is going to focus on two different words
which have a similar origin but
we don't use them in the same way, because one is positive
and one's a little negative and today's pair of words
is RARE and STRANGE. In both cases,
we're talking about adjectives that describe things that are not normal...
....however, RARE
tends to be more positive; STRANGE
tends to be a little more negative. Allow me to explain:
RARE is used for things that are extremely
uncommon or things that you don't find very easily.
For example: He collects
rear German books. RARE
in this context means they're not common
and they're not be easy to find
"which is probably why he collects them). STRANGE
on the other hand has a slightly different meaning
we use STRANGE to describe things that are different
and not always in a good way: a strange situation,
a strange person. Okay....
STRANGE has an idea of disapproval.
okay and again we're talking about strange
the adjective -- not stranger
the person. For example:
I didn't like that book. I thought the characters
were very strange. (In the sense that
I thought they were not normal and I didn't like the fact that they were
normal in the way they were
so remember the important difference
Both adjectives describe things that are unusual;
RARE is a little more positive....
STRANGE is not necessarily positive.
