(Irv) Ask most people about their favorite movie
and they can usually recite the last line.
But hardly anyone ever remembers a movie's first line.
How it all starts.
Where the fun truly begins.
- No. Forget it. - Come on.
Look how much fun they're having. Bikinis, beach balls.
We could be having that much fun.
You see her? That top comes off.
I'm not in the mood to watch soft-core ***.
Let's just get The Pianist.
Just 'cause you get the Heisman, doesn't mean
I have to watch some piano movie.
It's not just that. It's about the Holocaust.
Well, that's a selling point.
Forget it. Just get whatever you want. I don't care.
Alright, huddle up.
That-that means come here.
It's like working with raw clay, man.
Look, you're obviously sprung on this chick
so you need a game plan, okay?
- I know all the things women-- - No. Forget it, okay?
- I've tried everything. - No, you haven't.
You only tried what you always try. And it didn't work, did it?
You went the way of the wuss.
Put a boom box up in the air, you know
lay-your-heart-on-the-line Cusack crap. That bit is tired.
You don't wanna be living in some dippy romantic comedy.
You, my friend, want to live the life
of the action star, like The Rock.
Taking Japan by day, getting the honeys by night.
That man's bicep is twice the size of my head. I'm outta here.
Okay, no. Forget The Rock, man.
Look, we're gonna work with what you got, okay?
And what you have is that mysterious vibe.
That kind of Joaquin Phoenix, "I could go postal
on your *** at any minute" thing.
- You have to keep her guessing. - How do I do that?
- By ignoring her. - By ignoring her.
- That's your plan. - It's perfect.
'Cause right now she's expecting you to be all:
- "Sorry for copping a feel--" - I didn't cop a feel.
But if you ignore her, you maintain your position of power.
Nothing keeps a girl around more than the possibility
that maybe you don't even want her there.
You know, that actually kind of makes sense.
It's wrong and evil but...kind of makes sense.
Don't hate the player. Hate the game.
(man on TV) 'Ten thousand francs should pay our expenses.'
(man on TV) 'Our expenses?'
(man on TV) 'Louis, I think'

- Popcorn. - Check.
- Ice cream. - Check.
Did we rent the karaoke machine?
I don't know. Did we rent the machine yet?
- What? - For my party. You promised.
- Right. Karaoke. Got it. - And what about the pizza?
I thought I'd order it the night of the party.
I'd get a head start on that if I were you.
At my last slumber party, we had a serious pepperoni situation.
- Total chaos. - Dad, we can't have chaos.
Don't worry. I'll take care of it.
Now listen, I gotta go to work early
so Nina's gonna drive you guys, okay?
- He's acting weird. - We could be in trouble.
[door closes]
- Morning, Edna. - Morning.
Has...has Linda called?
- No, was she supposed to? - Well, not necessarily.
But I'm hoping she will.
I might've been wrong the other day
about you and Linda being sweet on each other.
I don't know why I said that.
I can't figure what's coming out of my mouth most times.
- I drink a lot. - No, you were right.
There is something. It's been a while but I know that feeling.
- I think she feels it too. - What sold you on it?
Her flat-out rejection or her flat-out rejection?
For your information, her rejection was hardly flat-out.
It was more implied.
She didn't say she was interested
but then, she didn't officially say she wasn't.
- Fine lines, Edna. - I don't know.
I think you spoke your piece good and she didn't respond.
- Doesn't that mean-- - I gave her a bunch of words.
I haven't shown her that I can back up those words
with some serious action. And women like men of action.
Don't they?
I just don't want you to get hurt, that's all.
Trust me. She's gonna call.
How can you be so sure?
What in the world..
Dr. Brown sent them for your sister. Isn't it romantic?
It certainly is not romantic. It is arrogant and puerile.
Does the man think he can buy your affection with a hundred--?
Three hundred.
Three hundred roses? Dear God, these must have cost a fortune.
You're right, Harry. It's insulting.
But I have absolutely no intention of responding
so you don't have to get so upset.
- You're not gonna respond? - No.

The man is persistent as a wart virus

Although you may need to avoid him as well as ignore him

I'll pick up lunch today from Mama Joy's.
We can eat in for the next two weeks if that's what it takes.
Oh, joy. Louise, you can take home the flowers if you want.
What should I do about the card?
Oh, I'll get rid of it myself.
This should last you six weeks. Know how to take it?
- Yeah, I-- - Now, Zoloft should be taken
once a day in the morning or in the evening, whichever you like.
Once decided, you need to take it at the same time every day.
Yeah, I know. Thanks.
Excuse me, do you know where the cashier is?
I think he's on break right now.
Perfect.
They only get five minutes. I wouldn't worry.
No, I'm not worrying. I'm just in a hurry.

I mean, how old are you, 15, 16?
Can't be so important that being 5 minutes late would kill you.
What are the odds that the next moment's gonna be better anyway?
At this particular moment, they're pretty good.
Will that be all?
Yeah, that's all.
- Oh, no gum or anything? - No.
Sorry, I forgot. You're in a hurry.
[stuttering] "It has been raining very hard for the past...three hours."
Don't ignore the slashes, Justin.

In three days.
And I have to tell her how I feel.

There's nothing dumb about the pursuit of a good woman.
Since we only have three days, we'll have to be more specific.
Okay, here's what I want you to do.
Go home, write down everything you wanna say to Kirsten.

and we are gonna practice it till you can recite it.

And if that doesn't work, I know a really great florist
I can refer you to.
Hey. I was thinking we could do pizza tonight.

Thanks, Delia.

Why?
Because my plans for tonight fell through.
I was supposed to have a date but instead
we decided to break up. It's just kind of sucky, that's all.
If you don't have anything to do tonight
you could come to my slumber party.

There's gonna be karaoke and pizza.
You have to meet my best friend. She's really cool. Please?
(Madison) You know what? That does sound like fun.
I'd love to come to your slumber party. Thanks.
(Delia) 'You're welcome.'
Okay. Let's try it again.
And remember, just keep it simple.
This is all very casual. Just two friends talking, okay?
Casual. Got it.
Hi, Justin. You wanted to see me?
Hi, Kirsten.
So, what's up?
You've been my best friend for as long as I can remember.
And I'm not sure when it happened
but my feelings for you began to grow.
Let's stop right there. Are you sure you memorized this thing?
Of course I memorized it. I spent eight hours memorizing it.
Okay, alright. I believe you.
You know what? I got it.
There are too many words. We could trim this part.
It's not the speech, doc. It's me.
[stuttering] Every time I think of Kirsten, I get nervous.
- You sure the drugs won't work? - Not by tomorrow.
Okay, I got it. Let's just forget the speech. Sit down.
Just sit down. Forget that.
I want you to just tell me. Simply.
Okay, in the most basic way you can.
What is it about Kirsten that's so special?
And don't...don't think. Just talk.
It's not one thing. It's just who she is.
Back in high school, when the kids used to make fun of me
for the way I talked, she didn't.
And she never finishes my sentences either.
You know, not even when she knows what I'm gonna say.
My dad doesn't even do that.
And she loves movies, almost like they were people.
How you have someone you call when you're feeling good
and other people you call when you're feeling lousy.
When she's sad, she rents "The Way We Were."
When something good happens to her, she rents "Groundhog Day."
Her all-time favorite is "An Officer and a Gentleman."
She told me once that she wished her life was like a movie.
I'm never gonna be able to do this, doc.
I might as well just quit now and save myself the humiliation.
Come on. You can't give up. Not when you're crazy about someone.
Sure you can. Been doing it my whole life.
Madison's sleeping over tonight.
- Awesome. All systems go. - That's not awesome.
She's coming over for Delia's slumber party.
I-I-I guess, sure, yeah, that's my fault, inadvertently.
I'm trying to help make her feel better--
What? That doesn't sound like ignoring to me.
- I did it through Delia. - It doesn't matter, dude.
Vertically or invertically, it makes no difference.
Inadvertently. The word is inadvertently.
You wanna play Scrabble or you wanna get the dibble-dabble?
Alright? Thank you. What time does the party start?
I don't know, 7?
- Okay. I'll be there at 6. - Why?
Because you need a wingman.

The odds are so slim. And short-term, it's still weird.
But..
But?
[slow piano music]
But that..
That's the problem that we keep running into.
You know, I'm still a little bit sick.
I'm not sure if that was just a fever dream or what's going on.
But do you think you could do it one more time, just so I'm sure?
I don't know what I'm doing here.
Neither do I.
But isn't that the way great love stories begin?
I'm not sure. I've never been much for romantic comedies.
I'm way more into horror movies.
If I get sick, you're in big trouble.
Oh, don't worry. I'm not that sick.
Yeah? Well, then get out of bed. Get your *** to high school.
I never wanna say that sentence again.

I know you told me to stop.
So you decided to ignore that and serenade me instead?
Well, I had to make sure that I tried absolutely everything.
I have a question for you.
Shoot.
Do you know what's happening
in the Democratic Republic of Congo?
Can't say that I do. No.
For the past five years, foreign armies
and the Congolese armed forces have been locked in a struggle
which has siphoned off most of the country's natural wealth.
And in the middle of this are 53 million civilians
'most of whom have been displaced and are outside'
'the reach of aid workers.'
While I was there, one of the villages
I was stationed by came under attack.
Bombs were going off all around me.
And I set out to find whatever survivors I could.
There weren't many.
You've gone through losing patients but this was different.
You cannot imagine this much death all around you.
I found a boy in one of the huts.
He'd been abandoned by his family.
He couldn't have been more than three years old.
I didn't know how long he'd been there
'and I couldn't imagine why they'd left him.'
But then I saw
some sores around his lip and a few lesions on his back.
And then it all made sense.
'He was bleeding terribly.'
I couldn't save him but I wasn't gonna leave him to die there.
So I picked him up and I held him in my arms
until he passed.
It wasn't until after he died
that I noticed the gash on my arm.
It must have happened during one of the explosions.
I don't know what to say.
I know. That's okay.
When did you get tested?
About a month after that. And then...a couple months later.
I just thought you should know the truth.
