Sometimes you may need to insert a hyperlink into a document you are sending electronically.
For example, in my cover letter, I might want to include my email address.
Once I type my email address, I'll need to insert a hyperlink that will make the address
active.
If Word recognizes it as an email address, it can automatically insert a hyperlink.
You can click your Space Bar or the Enter key to make it a hyperlink.
When the recipient of this document clicks on my email address, it will open their default
email client and automatically place my email address in a New Message.
Other times, I may need to insert a hyperlink manually.
Let's say I also want to include a link to my online portfolio or professional website.
First I will need to type the words MY PORTFOLIO. I just select the text and click the Insert
tab.
In the Links group, click the Hyperlink command. The Insert Hyperlink dialogue box appears.
In the text to display field, appears the text I selected.
In the Address field, I need to type the web address I would like my text to link to. Then,
click Ok. This makes it easy for someone to view my
portfolio online. When the person who received my file clicks
on My Portfolio, it will link them directly to my website.
Hyperlinks are not limited to text. You can also hyperlink pictures and shapes.
Suppose the recipient request that you not send a document with hyperlinks? You can easily
remove the hyperlink by selecting the text, and then click the hyperlink command, if you
look beside the address field, you will see Remove Link.
Click on Remove Link. You will notice that your text is no longer
underlined and the hyperlink has been removed. Since the text My Portfolio displays instead
of the actual web address I will have to type the web address for my portfolio.
The recipient of this letter will have to type this address in his or her web browser.
Remember to always double check the web address you insert for your hyperlink.
You wouldn't want to hyperlink to the wrong website!
