I was excited to join the community for a number of reasons.
Certainly, the dual role that I'm in,
the opportunity to work at an innovative institution,
and the sense of community that I experienced
during my interview.
In my most recent role at Harvard,
I focused a lot on supporting academics
both in terms of supporting research,
as well as teaching and learning, and often times
with the application of technology.
In addition, I have spent a number of years
working with technology
either directly through digital library activities,
or through IT operations that I was responsible for.
As CIO and Chief Librarian my responsibilities include
thinking strategically about library and IT
and how we can leverage their efforts
to advance the mission of the institution,
and then also working
with other senior administrators in the same way.
The dual role is very unique in Canada, in particular,
and I think as an innovative institution,
there is an understanding of the value of the role
and helping to advance and support scholarship, research,
teaching and learning.
One of the initiatives we're working on has to do with accessibility,
and within CCS they're looking at web accessibility.
Within the library, they're looking at accessibility to library resources.
And both of those are part of a larger set of initiatives
under that rubric here at the university.
On the library side, we're working in the area of open access,
which I think most people know is an area of strong interest of mine.
We have recently held a workshop
with faculty from three of the colleges
and have some great takeaways from that,
that we'll be working on through the Fall.
