Prof. Rao Bhamidimari, London South Bank University : In August last year professor John Clarke,
from the University of Illinois
contacted us to work with us jointly in organising a technology and management business plan.
Dr Issa Chaer, London South Bank University : It was a quite new venture for us at LSBU.
Our students examinations occur in January, however, the students
took on this additional challenge – and thought it would be a good idea
for some collaborative group project work with students from around the world.
Rao Bhamidimari : We at London South Bank University are in the process of developing
an environment to foster enterprise and confidence in our students
this kind of activity is a catalyst for progressing towards an entrepreneurial education environment.
[John Clarke, University of Illinois - voice over students presentations] Our goal here
is to bring students together to work around a problem they are concerned about
bringing together students from South America, Asia, North America and Europe to work together
on projects associated with London’s challenge of hosting a sustainable Olympic games.
[Rao – voice over student presentations] The week was a very successful week
students gained a lot working with each other.
It’s an exciting development to see how they work with each other successfully.
Brian Cheung, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology : During this 5 days
I can see the improvement of myself and the other teams
and my team mates. It’s a fantastic moment to see where we are going in such a short period of time.
Eunsung Lee, Yonsei University : The reason why I participated in this competition is to experience
very culturally diverse atmosphere, so I’m enjoying it right now.
[Kevin Pillay, LSBU, joined by two other students from LSBU] It was a good experience meeting them
and working with them and trying to find ideas
of how to save the world somehow and work around that big word ‘sustainability’.
From our point of view as engineers we basically work in a different way
so, it was kind of difficult but still very good, very good experience.
Shanshan ***, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology : Its brilliant and very rewarding experience
because even though
we have gone through a lot of troubles trying to communicate with each other
and trying to catch up with what other people are thinking about.
When we finally come to London we finally meet each other and we work with each other we become really good friends.
This experience is really really great.
Ricardo Iguchi, University of Sao Paulo : I made very good friends from different countries and it was very interesting
because I saw different cultures together that makes something better.
Betty Lin, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology : I’m very happy to be here on campus with LSBU.
I’ve never, well other than Cambridge,
I’ve not really visited within a university downtown and this environment here is – it’s very unique.
LSBU is very close to the city and you’re right in the centre of everything.
John Clarke, University of Illinois : Well I co-founded the competition four years ago.
This is our fifth competition and I was the project lead for this competition here in London.
The students started working together in October, November
and they worked together remotely through the internet and through telephone
and then in January they spent a week together here at London South Bank University.
So the students get real world experience working with a problem
– this is not a school problem there is no predetermined answer.
They have to deal with real issues; they have to work across cultures,
across disciplines and across physical boundaries on their teams.
Ultimately two teams did come out as being selected by the judges as the best, but we like to downplay which team won
and really promote the fact that all the students received a great experience,
allowed to build some real world experiences
and skills and in fact we hope that those are skills which can propel them early in their careers
and for the rest of their academic careers.
[The winners are announced – audience clapping]
[John Clarke, University of Illinois] I’m quite sure they are not expecting this – Green regeneration.
[Audience clapping and cheers while group collect prize and have photographs]
Ishva Minefee, University of Illinois : Well how happy I am? Thrilled, like the sky’s the limit, there are no boundaries.
I definitely loved it. It’s my first time to Europe so just having the experience
and more so the best thing I’ve enjoyed is the individuals around here the people
that we’re working with, the professors of LSBU – just I love it.
