we've been talking about media coverage of aged for days now and joining us to
continue that discussion is alanna minkowski host of the alone a show on
artsy thanks for joining us
thanks are now they're so how much of your shows recently have been what
percentage devoted to egypt first of all roughly
mom and
you know i'm not quite sure about a percentage but let's just say that we've
been focusing
almost half of our one-hour show that we do five days a week
to covering egypt jordan out at least and
at least two thirds that we've been trying to deal in autistic
i can do a full hour on egypt every single day because we just don't have
the resources we don't have the people
on the ground to be covering it twenty four hours a day on our channel that you
know we we try to talk about as much as the camp this is interesting because
we'd talk we talk a lot about media critique and how the media works on our
show
and one of the things i've been talking about for years now is all of the news
media in the u_s_ is a matter of convenience in other words
most networks have someone at the pentagon they have someone at the white
house so it's very easy to bring this news from those places and as you
mentioned each it is not the only story right now there is tunisia there is that
there's a number of other stories so
how much of that each of coverage do you think is convenient c_n_n_ sending
anderson cooper there he got beat up we saw a number of network sending people
there how much of that is a factor here how much of it being a real story is a
factor
and how much of it
can continue in other words remember the chilean miners and also the haiti
earthquake this story didn't all of a sudden go away overnight but it did
disappear from a lot of networks because people just got saturated with it
well i've got my matter convenience in terms of ideology also if you look at
some of the cable networks out there
fox news that of course being the best or i guess in the worst example you know
you one thing that c_n_n_ does is c_n_n_ is always good it's ending in
anderson cooper d_n_a_ tight black t-shirt whatever else is appropriate for
the area that even
email in the desert in the middle of all the action i think msnbc actually here
has been doing
very good time to doing a lot of on the ground cover to news about how situation
right there
for journalists are now foxnews has some hunters
completely ignored the story made yesterday they essentially played
and hour-long infomercial performer dot snu the daily news in a new center this
sunday and i ad
and you know that
they don't really cover anything from on the ground they just have their people
there in studio there just
spinning the stories of the way they want to so i think that that's more a
matter of convenience is something that fox news just knows how to do so well
just hearing the crap out of everybody all day long every single day twenty
four seven and a whatever story
is out there they'll find a way to make it up about as purses then
about the world is ending and
anil america has to stand up to you as long as barges pollen the muslim
brotherhood with all of our kinda
at the end of the global joe hottest war happens interest in your life
that's interesting because i've been thinking about the fox news coverage and
we can get more into the and i was thinking
that they didn't send people into
who cairo because they don't care about the story but you bring up a better
point which is
they don't need people there
for the narrative they're choosing it's just not necessary to have people there
well you're right and you know you can also look at some of the ratings and i
would just c_n_n_ they have been going on their resources they have people
there
and they for the first time you recently actually beyond msnbc when it comes to
their rating sack
favor isn't but
at the end of the day at foxnews is still number one and i find that
personally
you know a little trouble because if you look at i think that autissier has far
away
really owns this story and everybody has been turning their lives and i think
that's great you have a news outlet like that you know in that region there
at the same time you know
aljazeera is doing their job fox news is just attacking aljazeera
they are need to bill o'reilly just rights pointing fingers and saying that
well aljazeera anti-american an anti-semitic and that's why anyone on
the left likes to watch aljazeera insults
they just completely whitewash the entire thing and it works for them and i
find that
scaring frustrating because
aljazeera we watch it here in washington d_c_ because everyone has access to the
majority of americans don't
and so what the majority of americans see is
what they choose to seek and it's either foxnews or it could be c_n_n_ or msnbc
who i think urging it like i said a good job on the ground that perhaps almost a
little too optimistic in
end not necessarily
you know providing a little bit of critique asking some difficult questions
into you know how this might into fit into u_s_ foreign policy
how this might really turn out you know there are a lot of
options here as to what it might look like at the end that's right and without
getting into i mean i think that their criticisms to be made about this year i
think the in the uncontested anti semitic claims exist on al jazeera does
that mean that that week we should not be paying attention to the reporting
that the doing
certainly not the last night at ten forty just after ten forty five pm
eastern i just flip through
fox msnbc cnn headline news c_n_n_ headline news always is running some
kind of uh... unity mc type story but that aside
while there was original reporting going on from featured on msnbc and cnn
foxnews was running a recycled story
about the health care repealed did not pass the senate a story that we knew it
was just a creation for political posturing from republicans barack obama
indicated he's going to veto it even if it did get to his desk
it's an incredibly stark contrast just flipping on within three minutes what's
on each of these networks
does this go further than just the muslim brotherhood scare
tactic grant
in terms of why each network is covering it the way it does
absolutely i think that every single at
uh... newschannel even c_n_n_ if they try to call themselves the most
objective of the three cable networks i think that everybody has some kind of an
agenda to push here
uh... age
you know in terms of the msnbc's like i said i think the perhaps there being a
little too optimistic and it's a rod raja markers in the middle eastern let's
support the people
uh... without possibly asking as to who might
actually fill that void it hosting brock does get taken out last question how
long do you think this will be front page headline twenty-four hour news if
the situation staged
roughly the way it is now i mean another week another two weeks how long
i know that the lord to say that our media definitely doesn't have the
longest attention span dash
neither do
american viewers which is you know i have one aljazeera might be covering
this nonstop and not taking a bhai sof the story
you still see everyone else diverting to msnbc had a story that are a runaway
wild turkey that was attacking
avail track today after newsday gorilla
entertaining and i can allow had a good laugh at the media
but i think that my depends on
of the situation on the ground you know if it's day
is a violent if it stays of all it i'll
i think that when it comes to some of the networks they'll keep people that i
think box news is already done with that
alright alone and then cost a host of the alone a show on art sees great to
talk to you
thanks david i'd had a good show tonight me on
