Are your gums red and puffy?
Do your gums bleed after you brush?
Then you may have gum disease,
which is a common oral health problem.
Gums are made of soft tissue;
they surround the bottom portion of your teeth, called the tooth root.
Taking care of your gums is just as important as taking care of your teeth.
Gum disease, also known as gingivitis,
is the infection of the gums.
It is caused by bacterial plaque bio film
a sticky film consisting of bacteria that accumulates on teeth and gums.
Bacterial plaque bio film is the source of acids and toxins
that can make gums red, puffy and bleeding.
Overtime, gingivitis can cause gums to pull away from the teeth.
This allows formation of pockets between the teeth and gums.
Bacteria reside and reproduce in these pockets,
causing loss of attachment between tooth and gums.
This may lead to the loss of bone around the teeth
and could eventually result in loss of teeth.
How can you fight against gum disease?
Easy – it’s all about good brushing.
Brush teeth, and gums, and floss between the teeth twice per day,
two minutes each time, paying special attention to the back teeth,
as they are difficult to reach
and can accumulate more bacterial plaque bio film.
If your gums bleed, do not stop brushing and flossing
instead just use a toothbrush with soft bristles,
so you don’t hurt your gums.
