Hi everybody. In this short presentation we want to talk about how you can get books from the
Bethel Seminary Library and other area libraries as well as order books through interlibrary loan.
Probably the best way to get to the library website is through BLink. Once you have logged in you can click on the library tab at the
top of the page and then you can see that you can actually search from this page. You can do some searching and different things you might
want to do. We are going to go to the the library homepage just to see what that looks like.
And you can see here that you get a bunch of options for searching. "Books" is already selected for us.
We are going to do a search on the book of "Amos." We are going to type in "Amos and justice"
And see what we get.
Alright, so here we get some results. You can see that we get about 1200 results. Which is probably a little too big for a real search but for
our demonstration that should be just fine. On the left hand side we have what are called facets and this allows us to narrow down the search.
You can search by format, author, year, language and a few other things as well including topic and content and that can be
helpful when you're narrowing down a search.
When you find a book that looks promising and possible you can click on the title of the book to get a little bit more information.
And here you can see the bibliographic information that's presented, and on this side you can see some of the subjects this book
has been categorized under. This can really helpful when you're trying to narrow down the search or figure out how
a book has been categorized to find other books on that topic.
One of the nicest features of this tool, which is called WorldCat - which is a collection of all the academic catalogs and many of the public
libraries here in the United States and even in other parts of the world - is that it has a "cite and export" button.
Click on the cite/export button and then click on a citation style that you want and it will produce the
bibliographic citation for you and that way you can just copy and paste it into your paper.
There is you can see it, copy it and paste it into your paper.
Another option here is that you can export it into RefWorks and we'll talk more Refworks in another one
of our presentations, but it's a way to keep those citations together in a usable format.
When we are searching for books the first place obviously that we want to look are the Bethel libraries.
Bethel library is marked BSEM.
You can see we have the book and here's the call number.
If you're here on campus, you can just take the call number, go to the stacks and find the book for yourself.
If you are not on campus because you are an In- ministry student or a student that comes on
campus of once or twice a week you would like the books to be waiting here for you
all you need to do is click on the request through CLICnet button here
it will open up a new window.
Fill in your name and your barcode. The barcode number is on your student ID card, sometimes the barcode number has a letter
before and after the number. Just type in the number and then hit submit. It will ask you
where you want to pick up the book. You want to pick Bethel Seminary St. Paul.
If you're in ministry statement, you'll want to pick Bethel Seminary St. Paul regardless of where the
book is and then what can automatically mail the book to you.
Let's close that window
and do another search. Give you another example.
Alright, here's our book: Introduction to the Law of Israel. We'll click on that.
And we get our information again.
And as we scroll roll down you'll see that the Bethel libraries option is not here. What that means is that this particular book is not
available in our
Bethel libraries, but it is available in CLICnet. CLICnet is a consortia that we're a part of that includes many of the
private liberal arts colleges here in the Twin Cities. And so these books are books that we can usually get within a day or so
if we order them. And so if we wanted this book here at Bethel Seminary all we would need to do is click on this request item button.
Just like when requesting it before, fill out your name and barcode and again pick Bethel Seminary St. Paul for your delivery location
and we can get the book for you. Again for distance students; those students outside the seven county metro area here in Minnesota or
outside of San Diego County in San Diego you can just choose Bethel Seminary St. Paul as
your delivery location and we will automatically mail the book
to you
Alright let's say that we are looking for a book (and let me type in the title here)
and this particular book
here it is
we find out that there isn't a copy available in Bethel nor is there a copy available in CLICnet.
What can we do? In this case we can request the book through interlibrary loan.
The interlibrary loan process means that we, in the seminary library, will look to see where that book is available in other places. What we can
do if we want to (we don't have to do this). We can click on this the link here "Libraries that own this item."
Scroll down and if we put in our zip code (that is saved once we do it once) we can see that Luther Seminary has a copy of this particular
book.
We are also part of a consortium of seminaries here in the Twin Cities and so if you'd want you can actually go over to Luther Seminary
take your Bethel ID card and pick up the book there. If you don't want to pick it up there or if it's not
available at one of the local seminaries then you're going to need to go to interlibrary loan.
We use a system called ILLiad for our interlibrary requesting and when you click on this request item button it automatically logs
you in if you have already logged into BLink. If you haven't it will ask you to login, which
is no big deal, just log in using your Bethel username and password.
One of the best things about it is that the form will be automatically filled out for you. All you need to do is verify the information
and hit submit request. If you hit submit request, we will look for the book. When the book is available for you, you will get an e-mail
from us telling you that it's ready to pick up. Again if you are outside the local area
we will mail the book to you automatically you don't have to do anything else.
Well, that's it. If you need any more help finding books or if you get stuck, please give me a call
or and email and I'll be happy to help you. Have a great day!
