We'll start editing this project by looking at this Clips tab. Here you see icons for
each video in your YouTube account. Obviously, mine is going to look different than yours
will. You should see your screen recording clip, and your recorded "talking head" clip
at the top of your list.
Start by clicking your talking head clip, and then notice it appears here, in the Preview
window. You can click the play button to preview your clip. I'd like to trim this clip -- or
cut off all the stuff at the beginning and end of the clip that is not necessary.
Here's where I was getting ready. In my recording, I made sure that I gave a nice pause, and
then a big smile before I actually started reading my script. I try to do this every
time I record because it makes my editing job much easier! I can quickly see my sudden
smile and use that as my cue to cut everything before that point. I like to use this counter
under the Preview window to help me know about where to cut. So at about this time is when
I want my clip to begin.
To add this clip to the Timeline, just drag it from the Clips area to the Timeline.
To trim the clip just before my smile, just click to select the clip in the timeline.
You'll notice these "handlebars" appear on the edges of the clip. I'll just drag this
one in and pay attention to this time. I also keep an eye on the Preview window. When I
reach the approximate time I said I wanted to start, I look for the smile and that's
where I cut.
Remember -- this is all happening online -- you're not editing this video on your own computer,
but rather editing it online, right from YouTube. So this Preview is a little blocky-looking.
Don't worry about it too much -- when you publish this edited project it will look as
sharp as the original clips looked.
You can trim off the ending bits of clips in the same way -- just drag the handlebar
in and I'll look for my ending smile, or at least when my lips stop moving, to trim off
the excess.
Here's a tip -- if you later plan to include transitions in your project, don't cut these
clips too close -- leave a little time so that the transitions don't step into your
video space. I suggest leaving about a half a second or a second of "breathing room" for
a smoother edit.
