You know we're always looking for those late summer flowers, well how about
goldenrod? Goldenrod may be one of those plants that people are a little leery
of, they're afraid they're going to have allergy issues. Well I'm here to tell you it's a great plant.
Insect pollinated, so we don't have to worry about allergies when it comes to goldenrod.
And there are some amazing cultivars out there now. This is actually one that's
called
'Fireworks'.
And you can see why it's called 'Fireworks', it has these wonderful, sort of
arching, spikes of flowers that looks
just like
fireworks. It's a great plant; it
really usually flowers
usually toward September. It will last for several weeks so you'll have a nice, long
bloom period. It's a perennial, comes back every year and it's one of those dependable
perennials. It likes sun so you're going to need those sunny spots, but it seems to be one of
those rock solid plants that does very well for us. We also have some other
varieties of goldenrod that are actually much shorter. This is one called 'Golden
Fleece'. And 'Golden Fleece' is one of those that really is much shorter in a garden,
you don't have to think about big spaces with it, it really has a little bit different
flower with it, it has a much clumpy flower but it gives a lot more
*** for your buck as well. So think about those goldenrods for those late
summer flowers.
