So everybody’s telling you gotta be on Facebook, Linked In and other social media sites if
you want to market your products and services online. Are they right?
The answer is yes... and no. Yes because people can’t learn about you or buy from you if
they don’t know you exist. If your competitors are getting found online and you aren’t,
then you have given them an advantage.
The answer is no if you aren’t offering anything unique or valuable on a regular basis.
The only thing worse than doing nothing is doing something lame, embarrassing or damaging
to your company or personal reputation.
When talking about online marketing, email marketing, video marketing and article marketing,
establishing a presence on social media marketing sites is a good start, but to really stand
out, you need to offer valuable ideas, knowledge and insights that establish you as an expert,
that help people solve problems and you have to do it in a fun and or interesting way.
It’s not like you can just say... let’s do some facebook marketing, or some youtube
marketing or some twitter marketing and business will come.
Just like in the offline world, you have to stand out and you aren’t likely to get ahead
if you’re just doing what everyone else is doing. Be yourself. Share your unique perspectives.
Tell your stories and the lessons you’ve learned from them.
Content is king... that’s no secret. Want to know where your best content is going to
come from? Here are some tips and ideas.
Make a list of some of your biggest and best accomplishments... the things that you are
most proud of and they don’t have to be things that others even know about. Go crazy,
make it a long list and don’t limit yourself. It can go back to things you accomplished
as a kid... in sports, in school, at home, wherever.
Often you will find that as you reflect upon your biggest accomplishments, you will remember
facing significant roadblocks or seemingly insurmountable obstacles just prior to overcoming
them. What were those obstacles? List them. Describe them. Tell others how you overcame
them and what you learned.
Authentic, genuine content that people can relate to, understand, and learn from is the
kind that will set you apart and if you don’t share the best of what you have to offer,
then neither will the people you send it to.
