This is a short informative video series on health topics that matter. For example, did you know
one in four sexually active teens becomes infected with an STD every year.
Here's what you need to know.
Sexually transmitted diseases or STD's are on the rise and are a major health threat,
especially for teenagers and young adults.
But, STD's can affect anyone.
If you're having sex, get tested. STD's can cause very serious health problems. For
example, it can cause infertility,
it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, it can cause low birth weight,
or premature delivery.
It can also
increase the risk of getting *** AIDS infections.
Also it can lead to blindness,
and can cause death.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 19 million new STD infections
occur annually, nearly half of them among person's age 15 to 24.
In Orange County,
more than 8000 STD's are reported each year.
And those numbers are expected to rise each year.
Many teenagers, do in fact, practice oral sex
and are not aware that they can be exposed to STD's. For example
they can get syphilis, gonorrhea, and ***.
The most common STD's chlamydia and gonorrhea
are treatable, but many people especially females
do not have signs or symptoms and are not aware they have the disease.
It's very important for a woman who is pregnant to get checked for an STD.
It's very easy for the STD to be to be transferred to the baby and have a very bad
outcome.
Most females, we encourage them when they get pregnant
to have a checkup for STD's in the first prenatal visit.
In fact, all females who are sexually active age 25 and under
are encouraged to have a STD check up
each year.
The human papilloma virus or (HPV) is another common STD among teens and young adults.
By age 50 at least 80 percent of women
have acquired the HPV infection which can lead to some types of cervical cancer.
If HPV is not detected, monitored, or treated it can lead to cervical cancer. In fact,
it's the leading cause of cervical cancer.
HPV is the most common STD.
It is encouraged for people to get checked for STD's, ***,
Hepatitis,
and HPV.
Testing is confidential and available at the Orange County Health Department.
You should always have your partner get tested if you're exposed to an STD.
In fact, if you see sores on yourself or your partner both of you should go and get an
examination and maybe treatment.
If you have an STD is very important for you to tell your partners so that they can get examinations
and treatment, if needed.
The Health Department has available disease intervention specialists who were
experts at
notifying partners who may have been exposed to a disease in a very confidential manner, to assist
everybody
who's been exposed to a disease to be notified.
Testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) can also be effective
and preventing the spread of ***, the virus that causes AIDS.
*** can affect anyone, no matter the age, race, sex, or ethnicity.
It's very important
to correctly
and constantly use
condoms, latex condoms every time,
when you have sex to prevent the spread of STD's.
The best way not to get an STD is to abstain from sex, or
to be a long-term monogamous relationship,
and nobody's messing around.
So remember, get tested, protect yourself and the ones you love.
