Sony economized on Playstation and released it without a headphones out.
If you are, like myself, a victim of total production economy and neither
your TV, nor amplifier, nor Playstation has a headphone out, but you would
still like to connect them, here's a little trick you can try.
Most consoles are bundled with an AV cable, which has a freaking proprietary,
that is incompatible with anything on planet connector, which sticks into
the PS3, and the other end has three RCA connectors. And most probably this
cable is useless for you is our world of digital high definition connections.
Connect it to your PS3. Two of those RCAs - red and white - transmit stereo
sound from the console. This is a line out, so don't expect much power, but
it should be enough for mediocre headphones. The bigger problem is the headphones
have a jack connector, which obviously cannot be connected to RCA. You should
be using an adapter, which has a female jack on one end and two female RCAs
on the other. Unfortunately I don't own one, but I have RCA female to jack male
and RCA male to jack female. At first I decided to use the RCA females and
use a headphone splitter to join them. This works, but the connection is fragile
and too susceptible to static. But then I remembered that I had a female RCA
coupler. This one allowed me to create a robust connection. But if you don't
have any adapter, just buy the required one. If the cable length is not enough, you may
use a headphone extender cable. It is also nice to be able completely turn
of sound on the headphones, so that you don't have to unplug them all the
time when you don't need them. And one more thing. If you want to use the
headphones but still be able to output sound though other connections, you
have to enable this in the menu. Leave your desired connection in the sound
output settings to deliver multichannel sound. The A/V connector where
we hooked up the headphones will be in stereo, which is enough for the headphones.
