to me one of things is, you know,
you sit there and *** your head against the computer just going "Oh! How do I... You know,
...What's the point here...er..How do i say that?"
But then I say wait a minute- that's the time to get up and walk away and not think about it
and you know one of the beautiful things about how the human mind works
is that we actually have- there's a whole thing called dual process model. We have
one conscious stream of thinking about things that we're all familiar with this
- it's what's going on in our head's at any one time.
but we also have this wonderful capacity to sort of evaluate stuff
sub consciously if you will
and what's really nice is if you're stuck on a problem something that's
driving you crazy,
literally or figuratively
um...
it can actually work really well
to then step away and go "wait a minute- the thing to do is not to keep beating my head against the wall.
The thing to do is completely forget about it, go play guitar for five minutes,
go play violin for five minutes,
go, you know, strum the keyboard for five minutes.
Then suddenly
a new idea might pop into your head and you're achieving a solution to moving forward.
Instead of just sitting there getting frustrated at your computer, you've actually gone,
had a nice little break,
you've solved your problem and then you're going to feel that much more refreshed
come back and actually keep working. So
i do that by going into my lab, bugging my students, playing the guitar we have lying
around in there for everybody to use
uh... I'll wander around the building here and go bug my friends and
they look like they're busy it's all the more fun. You knock on the door
and bug them a little bit
but you know, it helps me out.
They don't always appreciate so much but little strategies like that matter.
