Both of my parents used to work within the carpets so I have been learning from them rug's restoration since I was 10 years old; I learned even carpets origins coming from different countries of the world , such as : Turkey, Caucasus, Bukhara and China. Now I know all kind of rugs.
Carpets' designs and symbols are important and meaningful; in fact the ancient nomads used to realize wool's rugs and kilims expressing their thoughts and feelings.
This carpet, for example, is a Mehrab originally turkish with more then 120-130 years. Here you can see the stairs which are directed towards a single direction, the one of Meccah's prayer; this carpet is all made by natural colours of the wool.
Then we follow to this caucasian rug from Zaikhour which is particulary famous for double crosses' designs, one horizontally one vertically and it's famous for eagle's heads drawings too made on the edges. This carpet is about 100 year.
Let's continue with this rug : it's a grave design before burying a dead body. On the top we find a red mehrab which indicates prayer direction . As we see there are even some crosses made by muslims which have no reference to Chhristianity but only to art and decoration.
We continue with this Qashqai carpet made by kurds in Iran; they made all the rug's drawings referring to reality : we can see a little girl on the camel, horses carring people above as well as birds, dogs, and even flowers and roses and all the other decorations they wanted to be expressed on .
We finish with the last carpet on the wall : it's a Kazak from Caucasus of 19th century with more then 150 years. The rug was made in Luribambak city where they used to work carpets with hard and long wires of wool so that it would be realized a so simple and primitive design.
As you see a carpet belonging to our parents or grandparents should be kept very well : so where the wool is discolored or there's no more wool in some parts of the carpet we renovate that and replace it with some new wool of natural finish making nodes which reconstruct the original design of the carpet.
Here you see my friend Mohammed , who is doing the restoration: after that he cuts the wool's wires to the bottom of the carpet then it turns out the original design and colours . After that we will stretch very well the restored part. This work requires a lot of patience and calm; at the end we took care of a nice and important carpet to give to our children.
Carpets are made of warps and wefts in which are made wool's nodes; on the contrary kilims are made only by warps and wefts and they were used as blankets.
