I'm Conny Opper. I live in Berlin - maybe the most interesting town in the world.
I'm organizing club entertainment, doing events, parties, concerts. I'm deejay-ing.
The night life in Berlin's pretty amazing, interesting, and really underground.
Like that's the spirit of the city I would say.
Take a good look around you because your task in the NightLife Exchange Project is
to help fill similar space with a once in a lifetime event based on culture of
South Africa.
We have chosen Conny because nobody else knows Germany's nightlife as well as he does.
What do you say? Are you in?
I'm in, definitely.
He just knows how to throw a real good party.
14 nightlife experts from around the world have been chosen to create one-of-a-kind
parties in their hometowns based on the nightlife of another country.
Having been briefed on their assignment, the creators are learning as much as they can
about their sister countries so they can create a once in a lifetime event.
What happens when the world swaps nights? This is the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project.
Hi, Siobhan. Hi, Dawn. How are you? Siobhan, I have some very exciting news. Yeah?
You've been chosen as the art creator for Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project.
My name is Siobhan O'Dowd. I'm from Belfast and I live in Dublin in Ireland.
I organize music events - everything from club nights and dance music to live music gigs.
And music festivals. It's all about fluffing the best of ours nightlife with nightlife
from another culture. One of the country we've got. We have Argentina.
Oh! That's great news! I've never been to Argentina and I've always wanted to go.
I'm Ale Lacroix and I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I deejay a lot of big parties and
festivals and clubs. I'm a TV and radio host with some bunch of company, neither one.
But we do huge things to consumer.
Your task in the Nightlife Exchange Project is to control a once in a lifetime event
based on the culture of Ireland. I'm going to be the creator? You will be the creator and
you will be working with another creator. So I'm really happy about this.
An exchange of night styles between Buenos Aires, Argentina and Dublin, Ireland.
So many is working. And 95 dollars is my prize. [Laughter]
Hi. I'm Nikhil Chinapa. I worked with MTV in India. I'm a DJ. I'm a party promoter.
I was a host in India's Got Talent. We're in a second season right now. We're a bit of a
dance music evangelist. We have our own little movement in India called Submerge.
It keeps up about 8 years ago and we've been doing several events and parties across India
working with different VJ's.
I've done a lot of work in the past, but this is easily the biggest thing that I've ever
come up with.
The sister country in Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project is Canada. This is going to be
ultra cool, man except that I have no idea what Canadian nightlife is all about and
I need to find out really quickly.
Just arrived in Cape Town coming from Falico, Berlin. And look! What a beautiful day.
We feel I have to experience South African culture firsthand now. I love Cape Town.
It's such a beautiful city - beautiful beach and oceans. Amazing! Woohoo!
It's time for me to start planning the South African party so I want to bring that beyond
like fashion and music.
It's called Boerewor. It's so delicious. Thank you very much. You made my night.
What I would love about this trip was I really got this wide spectrum of food, you know?
>From high cuisines to local food, little fast food snack on the way. But all these
experience, I want to talk to my caterer in Berlin when I'm coming back.
The part of the Nightlife Exchange Project I was looking for is most was coming to
Buenas Aires, I was really excited about coming and I want to take in as much of the
culture as I can.
Collaborating with a partner country or a sister city is going to be a really nice
experience. The thing that I'm going to do is try to represent the night scene from
Buenas Aires as original as it is.
Hi, Siobhan. Pleased to meet you. How are you?
I'm good. Thank you.
We tried a couple of drinks in 878 because I think their cocktail person is supposed to
be very, very good. So she made this kind of the signature cocktail. In fact, it was so
good, I got them to write down what was in it so that I can make it whenever I'm with him.
The biggest challenge is going to be making sure that the culture translates so it's
going to be trying to replicate entire situations. Buenas Aires doesn't wake up until the
afternoon and it doesn't go to bed until the morning. [Laughter]
Dave! This is going to be so much fun.
Okay. We have to host the Canadian party in India, but what exactly do we know about Canada?
I know the maple leaf detergent soap were used in Indian movies.
Then maybe make a big bath tub of maple syrup and have everybody jump into it. I'm really
excited about this project, but where are we going to do the party? Which city are we
going to have the actual...?
We're going to have it in Mumbai.
No. It's Delhi and that's where the...
For me, Banglo is the winner.
Everything stops at 11:30.
I know Banglo stops at 11:30 at night, but if you look at any weekend in Banglo,
there are more parties happening in Banglo than any other city.
I really want to bring the nightlife in your life. I was not born to do a...
Bangladore!
...restrictions.
Why not Mumbai?
It's kind of being overused as a party destination.
Nikhil, I hear you, but I still feel that...
But you're not listening to me. You hear me not?
A little bit.
I think we should do it in Banglo. And you know what?
I'm not taking no for an answer.
Welcome to the right venue. I'd love to give you guys a tour.
Brilliant. Let's do it.
Do you know the way there's 2 options at the moment. So either we elevate the crate and we
have the DJ blow us or we have it placed just on the floor and move the DJ above it.
Or to do maybe walk that space and take a look.
I want this party to be amazing and it's like we have everything else right. We have the
talent. We have the venue. We have all these bits and pieces that are exactly in place.
And the drink is the one thing that is left.
In Argentina, we drank Smirnoff and pomelo. It was kind of the signature drink that we got
over there and I think it would be really, really important to have that here.
We've been looking out to see if we can create the drink that we tried in Argentina.
Have a taste and let me know what you think.
No. It tastes like orange juice.
No.
No?
It doesn't...
What is the problem?
I guess the thing is we just... pomelo is a grapefruit lemonade and they just don't
sell that here and, you know. We've been looking at it, but it's just not available.
Well, I think it's a key part of the evening so I think it's something that we're going
to need to find the solution for.
I really don't know where to go from here. We're going to have to have another think
about what we can do.
I'm here at the Mikasvega Hotel to meet the caterer for the party. I want to talk with
him about like the food and all my experience, what they have in South Africa. It's so
interesting to see, I mean, all the multi-cultural influences, you know, in South Africa.
What did you prepare for our party?
Actually, I did not prepare anything yet.
What you suggest for this event?
Maybe we plan something to do like a mat.
Matches?
You know, mats. This is where I wanted...
Oh, a matr... yeah. That might be not the right idea. Yeah.
We have frogs also.
Oh, no. Frogs is not...
Not very spicy. This is berry-like. The French people, they eat...
Yeah, the French, but we're, you know, that's a south African party so I think that's
wrong taste in this case.
It could be.
Yeah. So it's not working. I'm sorry.
Hello?
Ale. Yeah, hi. It's Siobhan.
It's Siobhan from Ireland.
How are you?
Bien. We are doing really good. Taking some late breakfast. You know Argentina.
So how are you?
We've hit a little bit of a wall and...
Okay. Talk to me.
Do you know the drink that we have the night that we're in date?
The great freeze lemonade?
Our perfect Smirnoff drink in Buenos Aires?
Yeah, exactly. It's a big deal for me because it was a big part of whenever we went over
should be A and what they're telling me is that they can't source it over here.
Bueno, I might have a good idea to help you with that.
Really? I don't like making a big deal out of it, but I do think it's important to, um...
Don't worry. Something we'll figure out to do.
All right. Thanks a million, Ale.
Bye-bye.
Bye.
You have an idea to solve that?
I have 2 ideas.
Okay.
So you want to help me?
Yeah, of course.
Okay, let's go to her.
A large part of who I am is because of Bangalore. I grew up in Bangalore and the music scene in
Bangalore is fantastic. I don't know if those guys at Smirnoff were entirely convinced about
Bangalore being the place to throw this party. So what I've done is I've taken this up as a
challenge. I'm throwing a party in Bangalore with a bunch of my friends. In spite the food
set up, it there's called the Trans Pavilion.
I'm hoping that Bangalore's party fateful will still come true and we can have a great
event tonight.
I think the party went over really well. A lot of people still hanging out. They didn't
want to go home. It's Sunday night at Bangalore. Tomorrow's a working day and look at them.
Nobody parties the way they party in Bangalore and, hopefully, Smirnoff
gets the message. It's happening the big one here in Bangalore. It's a done deal. IT's a given.
Honestly, I'm kind of nervous because the first caterer was a really funny guy.
His ideas were also a little bit too crazy. Actually, I hope to find a really easy
working solution today and I really want to bring in my experience from South Africa.
That's why I'm meeting the other caterer today. The meeting today has to work out.
Otherwise, we're really in trouble.
We've prepared South African sausage, boerewors.
Totally original South African food actually.
Yeah. What do you think?
Can I have a try?
Sure.
It's good, but something's missing. Boerewors... you're getting any bread? Almost like a
hotdog?
Okay.
But then you get the special barbecue sauce.
I see. Yeah. I know.
It's good, but I think this kind of way, we have to change it.
Okay.
We really have to bring the original style. I hope you still kind of realize all these
ideas now. I'm not too late for this.
It's a tough job, but I'm pretty sure we can do it.
I was really nervous before the meeting, I have to say. And now, all the way, we talked
about it and he showed me the food he want to have. You know. I'm kind of confident.
I'm really looking forward to the party.
I have a really good feeling now and I'm looking forward to them.
Great. Cool.
Cool.
Bye.
Thanks.
Bye-bye.
The one call me, "Ale," she said to me, "Ale! I'm in trouble. I need your help!"
So here I am.
We were having trouble with the drinks for the party. So I was talking to Ale and he's
come over and he's brought this guy, Kenji. He's this amazing mixologist. So we're going
to talk through some options and he's going to see if he can find a solution.
What are the flavors that we use from Argentina?
Something that is really, really from Argentina called "the Mate." This is very typical
from the people of the farms from the countryside. They wake up and they drink mate.
It's my role as a mixologist to really look at the different flavors from each city and
country. Then work out how they work into certain classic cocktails and to be able to
bring these drinks from one city to another. So we're going to use some of this "the mate"
flavor in some drinks that we create the one I said I should feel. Let's mix them up.
Kenji, let me tell you something. I can't believe you've prepared this fantastic drink
with mate. You're an expert.
Thank you.
Incredible.
Actually, with Kenji, it was absolutely fantastic. I actually think it's going to make the
difference between a great event and an absolutely amazing event.
I want to marry you. [Laughter] Yeah.
It's my first time here in Dublin so I'm really excited to go and walk around the part of
the city. See the people. See the night culture.
I want to take a picture so we would kind of recreate these in Buenos Aires.
Cheers!
Cheers!
No, smoodgers.
Sorry? Smoodgers. That's lovely.
I think there's going to be a meeting again with our agency and we'd go to the plans for
the party. You know after Nikhil decided that it's going to be Bangalore, we'll really
push it hard.
[Indiscernible] the Kalinga. Let's call it Kalinga.
That's perfect, man.
That can be the stage. Wow.
It's going to be very likely we're in a bar. It's going to be laid back. It's going to be
chilled out. Kind of loungey…
This is the bar.
Yeah.
I came back from Ireland real excited. I love that place. I love Dublin - the place,
the bar, the people.
I can't wait for the event.
Totally luminous.
Today's the big day. So we're really excited to be here and we're going to go in there
and have a look around.
It's going to be amazing because they're seeing all of the bits that we've seen on paper
and all the creatives that we've reviewed all coming together.
It's been quite an incredible journey over the past 4 months. The more strategic aspect
has been excluding things. You know, there's so much that you want to do and we would
rather say no, no, no. We have to focus on this. We have to concentrate on this key
element, but we've been dealing with that issue and we should be okay.
In a couple of hours, for sure this is going to be... it's going to look much different.
Bueno. This is it.
I'm concerned because they started working at 5am.
We should have 7 more hours to finish. They should, like, hurry, you know?
We're in the middle of the set up of the party in 12 hours that will be the biggest party
in town.
That looks great. I can't believe they did all of this.
Perfect.
The people who were out there talk about, "Let's open the club for now."
[Speaks German]
I'm very proud to what we did like how everything came together-great crowd, great music.
Tonight is fantastic.
We became a little nervous during the afternoon. From now, it's our only stars and moon
in this night.
When you walk through this 10-foot bar area is exactly the same. It's really like a trip.
We are in Dublin tonight. We're going to be one of the best party around the world.
And you know that.
Smirnoff Exchange Project.
Wow. What a party!
The people really enjoy it and enjoyed big time. I miss Siobhan, really. I wish she was
here with me tonight. But bueno, she's creating and be part of the Argentinian experience
in Ireland. Siobhan, my best for you.
I actually can't quite believe it's 1:44 in the morning. It's just been such a funny
night. It's all gearing up to the big points in the evening which was whenever they create
lifted up and revealed idio, um, Rizaldin who's deejaying. I couldn't be happier.
The night has gone absolutely amazing. Everybody's worked so hard to pull it together and
I'm absolutely delighted.
The party's only started. It's in there. You can hear the music.
I'm excited. That's how I feel. Let me get on with it now.
There is nothing like this anywhere on the planet.
It's good music. It's good party.
The planet is one big club. It's what I've learned to come to know.
What's a nightlife? Is that just music? Is it just sending over a DJ somewhere?
It has to go beyond that.
It was a long way to go and... Anyway, I really learned so much in this time and... yeah.
It's really kind of moving moment.
To have the opportunity to travel to Dublin. I never been there before and to really
get involved in the Nightlife Exchange Project. So that's, for me, was the most richest
experience.
What kind of differentiated this was the fact that it was a better culture and
it was a bit integrating full culture into the night. They're in like the challenge really
and I genuinely feel like we've got past that. So now, I think, if you don't mind, I'm
going to go upstairs and do some dancing.
