My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered dietitian with the Austin Regional Clinic
and I'm going to talk to you about how to eat healthy at Chili's. The easiest way to
eat healthy at Chili's is to go straight to their Guiltless Gourmet Menu. That particular
menu already has several options listed that are low in fat, low in calories. You don't
even really have to think about it. You just choose something right off that menu and you
know you are going to be making a healthy choice. If you don't see something on that
particular menu that really appeals to you when you go look at their regular menu you
do want to try to get things that are grilled or charbroiled, try to avoid anything that
has breading on it or that is fried so for example if you were going to get a sandwich
you would want something that was again grilled, not a fried chicken sandwich type thing. You
also want to avoid sides that are fried, whether it is french fries or fried onions or anything
like that. As far as side vegetables definitely try to get steamed varieties of vegetables,
try to avoid things again that are fried or that are covered with a lot of cheese. Cheese
generally in restaurants will be in very large portions so it will be a lot of saturated
fats, the kind of fats that is very bad for your heart health so as much as you can you
want to limit any extra cheese on vegetables or sides when you go out to eat at Chili's
in particular. As far as beverages you want to angle for beverages that don't have extra
sugar so plain old water, unsweetened tea, diet soft drinks, anything along those lines.
If you do want to sweeten your tea or if you are choosing coffee, try to use a sugar substitute
in its place of regular sugar. So just kind of in summary again eating at Chili's the
easiest way to eat healthy is that guiltless menu. Otherwise, really pay attention to your
choices, angle for the grilled or charbroiled, stay away from your fried foods and be careful
with your drinks that you are choosing, sugar free items for deserts. It is really best
to avoid unless you are going to split them with some friends. So these are just some
basic tips for how to eat healthy at Chili's.
